<< ️The purpose of (AA) article is to derive a universal condition that reveals that two statistical metrics—the mean and coefficient of variation of the conditional times—come together to determine when resetting can expedite the completion of a selective outcome, and furthermore can govern the biasing between preferential and nonpreferential outcomes. The universality of this result is demonstrated for a one-dimensional diffusion process subjected to resetting with two absorbing boundaries. >>

In contrast, fixational sampling that preceded a choice showed negligible history biases that were overcome quickly in favor of wider exploratory sampling. >>

For certain parameter values, however, these spiral waves can become unstable, resulting in spiral defect chaos (SDC), characterized by the continuous creation and annihilation of spiral waves and thought to underlie atrial fibrillation. During SDC, the number of spiral waves fluctuates and drops to zero at termination. >>

<< ️In this work, (AA) demonstrate that varying a single parameter allows the system to transition from SDC to a single spiral wave, passing through an intermediate regime of intermittency. In such intermittent dynamics, intervals of SDC are sandwiched between non-SDC intervals during which the number of spiral waves remains small and constant. (They) quantify this intermittency and show that the mean termination time increases significantly as the control parameter approaches values for which a single spiral wave is stable. >>

<< ️Biologists and physicists have a rich tradition of modeling living systems with simple models composed of a few interacting components. Despite the remarkable success of this approach, it remains unclear how to use such finely tuned models to study complex biological systems composed of numerous heterogeneous, interacting components. >>

<< ️One possible strategy for taming this biological complexity is to embrace the idea that many biological behaviors we observe are ``typical'' and can be modeled using random systems that respect biologically-motivated constraints. Here, (AA) review recent works showing how this approach can be used to make close connection with experiments in biological systems ranging from neuroscience to ecology and evolution and beyond. Collectively, these works suggest that the ``random-with-constraints'' paradigm represents a promising new modeling strategy for capturing experimentally observed dynamical and statistical features in high-dimensional biological data and provides a powerful minimal modeling philosophy for biology. >>

The absorption does not change the trajectories but instead reduces an intensity variable associated with each trajectory. By analyzing the steady-state behavior as a function of particle number and the size of the loss region, (They) identify a threshold particle number, below and above which distinct structural changes are observed. >>

<< ️Interestingly, below this threshold, increasing the particle number reduces the state-switching time (the time required for a particle to transition from active to passive and back to active). In contrast, above the threshold, further increases in particle number result in longer switching times. In the subthreshold regime, (They) analytical model predicts structural characteristics and switching dynamics that align well with simulations. << ️The process of producing a liquid column is common in daily life and industrial applications, such as walking through a puddle and roller printing. While governed by the Navier-Stokes equation, its dynamics are often studied by numerical means, which hinders a full understanding of the rich mixture of physics behind, for instance, the competition of surface and potential energies, and how the pinch off is affected by the kinetic energy and water jet when a large cylinder is used. For pedestrians rushing out of the rain, the water column inevitably involves turbulence and defies simple theoretical analyses.  >>

<< ️As a result, this (AA) work will focus only on cases with a low Reynolds number to enable laminar flow and the existence of reversible and quasistatic stages. Combined with simple models, (They) elucidate the mechanism that drives the change of morphology and derive analytic expressions for the critical height and upper radius for the liquid column when transiting between three stages. >>

<< ️Stage I is characterized by a static and reversible profile for the column whose upper radius 𝑟𝑡 equals that of the cylinder. The column becomes irreversible and 𝑟𝑡 starts shrinking upon entering stage II. It is not until 𝑟𝑡 stops shrinking that the column neck accelerates its contraction and descends toward the pool, the quantitative behavior of which is among the successful predictions of our theory. Pinch off dominates the second half of stage III without its usual signature of self-similarity. This is discussed and explained with an interesting incident involving a water jet similar to that made by a dropping stone. >>
