# zoo: the rehabilitation of insects: not all of them are pests

<< Insects are important wildlife often overlooked in urban habitats. What we do notice are the cockroaches, ants and mosquitoes in and around our homes. All too often we reach for the insect spray. >>

# qubit: an energy control approach to build quantum computers: quickly jump two rungs at a time without spilling any water from the glass

<< Dr. Sergey Danilin, (..) describes quantum control-the process of using chips like transmons to build quantum computers-by extending the "climbing a ladder" analogy. "To get a useful quantum system, you need to imagine climbing a ladder while holding a glass of water-it works if one does it smoothly, but if you do it too fast, the water spills. Certainly, this requires a special skill."  (..)  in the quantum world, the trick for climbing the ladder quickly without spilling any water is by carefully jumping two rungs at a time. >>

# phyto: the fussy pollination scheme of the Joshua tree

<<  the plants commonly known as Joshua trees include two distinct, sister-species of plant: Yucca brevifolia Engelm. and Yucca jaegeriana McKelvey, each pollinated by two sister-species of yucca moth Tegeticula synthetica Riley and Tegeticula antithetica Pellmyr, respectively. A number of studies have argued that the moths have coevolved with their hosts, producing a pattern of phenotype matching between moth ovipositor length and floral style length. >>

First recorded observations of pollination and oviposition behavior in Tegeticula antithetica (Lepidoptera: Prodoxidae) suggest a functional basis for coevolution with Joshua tree (Yucca) hosts. # gst: (you must) read the noise as a message

<< Noise is often thought to be a nuisance with negative consequences, (..)  But through this study we show that noise can actually be used as a salient informational cue. It can provide individuals with important information about their environment and when it's safe to hunt. >> Inga Geipel

When does noise become a message?  Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Feb 6, 2019.

https://m.phys.org/news/2019-02-noise-message.html

<< Background noise can have strong negative consequences for animals, reducing individual fitness by masking communication signals, impeding prey detection and increasing predation risk. While the negative impacts of noise across taxa have been well documented, the use of noise as an informational cue, providing animals with reliable information on environmental conditions, has been less well studied. >>

# sec: oops! 5G, a European dilemma (the 1st one of a series): the quiet spread of Huawei

<< China's Huawei has quietly become a leading supplier of the backbone equipment for mobile networks, particularly in developing markets thanks to cheaper prices. >>

<< Each year it invests between 10 and 15 percent of its sales revenue on research and development. It spent $13.8 billion on R&D  (Research and development) in 2017 and $15 billion last year. >>

<< It's a dilemma for European telecoms firms: Should they steal a march on competitors and rapidly roll out next-generation 5G mobile networks using equipment from top supplier Huawei? Or should they heed US-led warnings of security threats and sit tight, and possibly fall behind? >>

<< Huawei strenuously denies its equipment could be used for espionage. >>

<< Deutsche Telekom, in an internal document obtained by Bloomberg, warned that Europe could fall behind China and the United States by as much as two years if it forgoes using Huawei's 5G equipment. >>

# ai.bot: organizations can help keep workers productive and happy with AI "superminds", by Thomas.

<< Malone (Thomas Malone is a professor of management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, founder and director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence) predicts that AI, robotics, and automation will destroy many jobs-including those of high-skilled knowledge workers-while at the same time creating new ones. By investing in the right kinds of AI, he says, organizations can help keep workers productive and happy-and make sure our “superminds” are actually smarter than our regular minds. >>
