# web: facebook: a synthetic perspective from the deep brain, by Mark

<< We've learned that Zuckerberg (Mark  Zuckerberg) once called the first Facebook users "dumb fucks" for handing over their private data >>

<< Part of the problem is that we are simply addicted to Facebook. Like cocaine addicts, alcoholics or smokers, we have a hard time giving it up >>

<< As Sean Parker, founding president of Facebook, admits, the narcotic-like, slot-machine effects were consciously designed into the platform right from the start. As Parker bravely confesses, they "understood this consciously," but they “did it anyway.” >>

# web: facebook (etc) data, a big correlated lump, harder to delete (then disappear)

<< Information on users' personalities or 'psychographics' was just a modest part of how the model targeted citizens. It was not a personality model strictly speaking, but rather one that boiled down demographics, social influences, personality and everything else into a big correlated lump >>. Matthew Hindman.

<< If Facebook is that hard to leave, just think about what will happen as virtual reality becomes more popular. The powerful algorithms that manipulate Facebook users are not nearly as effective as VR will be, with its full immersion >>

# trade: cryptocoin dances: Bitcoin vs. Zuk.CaLibra, the beginning

<< Bitcoin is up an eye-popping 245% in 2019 so far.

And based on many business news headlines of the past week, you’d think bitcoin’s surge is all thanks to Facebook.

But bitcoin was already up nearly 200% before June 18, when Facebook announced its plans to launch a cryptocurrency called Libra next year and a digital wallet called Calibra. And the Facebook news initially sent bitcoin lower for the first few days, before it recovered. >>

# life: how social media could act to dehumanize the 'dehumanizable' ...

<< Fundamentally, we wanted to examine how online platforms can normalize hatred and contribute to dehumanization, (..) We found that the language used in these Facebook interactions hewed very closely to three stages we see in Terrell Northrup's theory of intractable conflict (..) One stage is the threat (..) A second stage is distortion (..) A third stage is rigidification >> Jessica Jameson.

# behav: a great white shark at rest

<< Great white sharks are known for racing past the Mid-Atlantic states to get someplace else, so experts pay attention in rare cases when one not only stops, but stays put.
That's happening now along the Virginia-North Carolina border with a 10-foot, 3-inch male tracked by OCEARCH.
"It's interesting watching white shark Shaw since unlike other sharks on the Tracker, he has been hanging out off the Virginia coast for over a month," OCEARCH posted Tuesday on Facebook. >>

"and even perhaps what they are doing" . Non solo.
