# gst: emergent flocking in mixtures of antialigning self-propelled particles.

FIG. 4. (c) Mean field phase diagram with disorder (green triangles), polarized moving bands (blue circles), and polarized patches (orange squares).

AA << observe a flocking mechanism, the emergence of a state with global polar order, in mixed systems of self-propelled particles with purely antialigning interactions, i.e., the ground state for any pair of particles is to be opposedly oriented. In binary mixtures, (They) find that flocking can be realized by cross-species antialigning that is dominant compared to intraspecies antialignment. >>

<< While the key mechanism can be understood within a mean-field description, beyond mean-field (AA) develop an asymptotically exact Boltzmann-scattering theory from first principles.  This theory yields analytical predictions for the flocking transition and shows excellent quantitative agreement with simulations of dilute systems. For large systems, (They) find either microphase separation or static patterns with patches or stripes that carry different polarization orientations. >>️

# behav: swarms and hybrids, an approach to create and control collective motions (on demand)

AA << demonstrate that it is possible to generate coordinated structures in collective behavior at desired moments with intended global patterns by fine-tuning an inter-agent interaction rule. (Their) strategy employs deep neural networks, obeying the laws of dynamics, to find interaction rules that command desired collective structures. The decomposition of interaction rules into distancing and aligning forces, expressed by polynomial series, facilitates the training of neural networks to propose desired interaction models. Presented examples include altering the mean radius and size of clusters in vortical swarms, timing of transitions from random to ordered states, and continuously shifting between typical modes of collective motions. This strategy can even be leveraged to superimpose collective modes, resulting in hitherto unexplored but highly practical hybrid collective patterns, such as protective security formations. >>

# game: flocking by turning away.

<< Flocking, as paradigmatically exemplified by birds, is the coherent collective motion of active agents. As originally conceived, flocking emerges through alignment interactions between the agents. >>️

AA << report that flocking can also emerge through interactions that turn agents away from each other. >>

<< Whereas repulsion often leads to motility-induced phase separation of active particles, here it combines with turn-away torques to produce flocking. Therefore, (AA) findings bridge the classes of aligning and nonaligning active matter. (Their) results could help to reconcile the observations that cells can flock despite turning away from each other via contact inhibition of locomotion.  >>️

AA << work shows that flocking is a very robust phenomenon that arises even when the orientational interactions would seem to prevent it. >>️
