# gst: phase transitions in anisotropic turbulence.

<<
Turbulence is a widely observed state of fluid flows, characterized by complex, nonlinear interactions between motions across a broad spectrum of length and time scales. While turbulence is ubiquitous, from teacups to planetary atmospheres, oceans and stars, its manifestations can vary considerably between different physical systems. For instance, three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flows display a forward energy cascade from large to small scales, while in two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, energy cascades from small to large scales. In a given physical system, a transition between such disparate regimes of turbulence can occur when a control parameter reaches a critical value. The behavior of flows close to such transition points, which separate qualitatively distinct phases of turbulence, has been found to be unexpectedly rich. Here, (AA) survey recent findings on such transitions in highly anisotropic turbulent fluid flows, including turbulence in thin layers and under the influence of rapid rotation. (They) also review recent work on transitions induced by turbulent fluctuations, such as random reversals and transitions between large-scale vortices and jets, among others. The relevance of these results and their ramifications for future investigations are discussed.

# gst: vortex structures under dimples and scars in turbulent free-surface flows

<< Turbulence beneath a free surface leaves characteristic long-lived signatures on the surface, such as upwelling 'boils', near-circular 'dimples' and elongated 'scars', easily identifiable by eye, e.g., in riverine flows. >>️

AA << explore the connection between these surface signatures and the underlying vortical structures. We investigate dimples, known to be imprints of surface-attached vortices, and scars, which have yet to be extensively studied, by analysing the conditional probabilities that a point beneath a signature is within a vortex core as well as the inclination angles of sub-signature vorticity. >>️

<< The analysis shows that the likelihood of vortex presence beneath a dimple decreases from the surface down through the viscous and blockage layers in a near-Gaussian manner, influenced by the dimple's size and the bulk turbulence. When expressed as a function of depth over the Taylor microscale λT, this probability is independent of Reynolds and Weber number. >>️

<< Conversely, the probability of finding a vortex beneath a scar increases sharply from the surface to a peak at the edge of the viscous layer, at a depth of approximately λT/4. Distributions of vortical orientation also show a clear pattern: a strong preference for vertical alignment below dimples and an equally strong preference for horizontal alignment below scars. >>️

AA << findings suggest that scars can be defined as imprints of horizontal vortices approximately a quarter of the Taylor microscale beneath the surface, analogous to how dimples can be defined as imprints of surface-attached vertical vortex tubes. >>

# gst: creating topological vortex rings (on demand)

<< Vortex rings are ubiquitous topological structures in nature. In solid magnetic systems, their formation leads to intriguing physical phenomena and potential device applications. >>

Here, AA << theoretically show that topological vortex rings can be created by a current pulse in a chiral magnetic nanocylinder with a trench structure. The creation process involves the formation of a vortex ring street, i.e., a chain of magnetic vortex rings with an alternative linking manner. The created vortex rings can be bounded with monopole-antimonopole pairs and possess a rich and controllable linking topology (..) which is determined by the duration and amplitude of the current pulse. >>

# gst: self-trapped nonlinear waves with multiple phase singularities.

AA << investigate the existence of self-trapped nonlinear waves with multiple phase singularities. >>️

They << focus on configurations with an antivortex surrounded by a triangular arrangement of vortices within a hosting soliton. (AA) find stationary patterns that can be interpreted as stable self-trapped vortex crystals, constituting the first example of a configuration of this sort with space-independent potentials. Their stability is linked to their norm, transitioning from unstable to stable as their size increases, with an intermediate region where the structure is marginally unstable, undergoing a remarkable and puzzling self-reconstruction during its evolution. >>️

# gst: when a turbulence can be confined

<< Turbulence is hard to control. Its ephemeral nature prevents us from treating it as an ordinary state of matter. Here (AA) create a stationary and isolated blob of turbulence using only elemental building blocks: vortex rings.  The turbulence is confined in a spherical region, surrounded by a quiescent environment, initiated and sustained by vortex rings. Crucially, vortex rings can be endowed with conserved quantities such as energy and helicity, which can be transferred to the turbulent state. Using 2D particle image velocimetry and 3D particle tracking velocimetry, (AA) demonstrate how confinement of turbulence occurs when vortex rings repeatedly collide, in contrast to coherent vortex reconnections. The pathlines depict the difference between these states of flow. >>️

# gst: kirigami exposed to external flows.

<< Kirigami patterned materials have found several applications in recent years due to their ability to assume complicated shapes and exhibit emergent physical properties when exposed to external forces. >>️

<< Consisting of an array of cuts in a thin material, fabrication of these patterns can be quite simple. Here (AA) show that when they are placed in fluid flow, kirigami cut sheets with various patterns produce a verity of flow patterns in the wake. Through several sets of experiments, (AA) show that the kirigami sheets placed in flow can undergo static or dynamic flow-induced instabilities as a result of which they can buckle or undergo limit cycle oscillations, or they can remain stable while undergoing very large elongations. >>️

<< The ability to create controlled small-scale vortex shedding, induce desired flow-induced instabilities on structures, and form specifically-angled jets will enable several future applications in flow mixing (e.g., by producing small vortices in uniform flow at low Reynolds numbers), flow control (e.g., by controlling the direction and the number of jets that are produced downstream), and underwater soft robotics (e.g., by imposing desired flow-induced oscillations on structures). >>

# gst: reconfiguration and oscillations of sheets subject to vortex

<< The dynamics of a thin low-density polyethylene sheet subject to periodic forcing due to Bénard-Kàrmàn vortices in a long narrow water channel is investigated here. In particular, the time-averaged sheet deflection and its oscillation amplitude are considered. >>

<< The former is first illustrated to be well-approximated by the static equilibrium between the buoyancy force, the elastic restoring force, and the profile drag based on the depth-averaged water speed. >>

AA << observations also indicate that the presence of upstream vortices hinder the overall reconfiguration effect, well-known in an otherwise steady flow. For the sheet-tip oscillations, a simple model based on a torsional-spring-mounted flat plate correctly captures the measured tip amplitude δb over a wide range of sheet physical properties and flow conditions. >>

<< Furthermore, a rich phenomenology of structural dynamics including vortex-forced-vibration, lock-in with the sheet natural frequency, and flow-induced vibration due to the sheet wake, multiple-frequency, and modal response is reported. >>

# gst: apropos of collisions of a vortex dipoles, vortex unbinding, vortex pinning to the edge, and emission of rarefaction pulses.

<< Vortices and dark solitons are fundamental defects that appear in nonlinear physics at all scales, from nonlinear optics to cosmic fluids. In two or three dimensions, dark solitons are fundamentally connected to highly ordered vortex states through an intrinsic modulation instability in the surrounding matter. >>️

<< Here, [AA] report an experimental realization of ring dark soliton (RDS)  generation in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid trapped in a circular box. By quenching the confining box potential, [they] observe an RDS emitted from the edge and its peculiar signature in the radial motion. As an RDS evolves, [they] observe transverse modulations at discrete azimuthal angles, which clearly result in a patterned formation of a circular vortex dipole array. Through collisions of the vortex dipoles with the box trap, [they] observe vortex unbinding, vortex pinning to the edge, and emission of rarefaction pulses. >>

# gst: tipping in a low-dimensional model of a (tropical) cyclone.

<<Tipping is the rapid, and often irreversible, change in the state of a system [Ashwin P. et al (2017)] >>

AA << present a case study of both rate and noise-induced tipping between the stable states, relating to the destabilization or formation of a tropical cyclone. While the stochastic system exhibits transitions both to and from the non-storm state, noise-induced tipping is more likely to form a storm, whereas rate-induced tipping is more likely to be the way a storm is destabilized, and in fact, rate-induced tipping can never lead to the formation of a storm when acting alone. For rate-induced tipping acting as a destabilizer of the storm, a striking result is that both wind shear and maximal potential velocity have to increase, at a substantial rate, in order to effect tipping away from the active hurricane state. For storm formation through noise-induced tipping, (AA) identify a specific direction along which the non-storm state is most likely to get activated. >>

# gst: inertial particles within co-rotating dusty vortices

<< dispersed particles with moderate inertia cause the vortex pair to push apart to a separation nearly twice as large as the initial separation. >>

<< antisymmetric vorticity generated by particles flung out of the rotational cores causes the vortex pair repulsion. Eventually, the two dusty vortices merge into a single vortex with most particles accumulating outside the core similar to the dusty Lamb-Oseen vortex described in Shuai & Kasbaoui (2022) >>

<< For weakly inertial particles, (AA) find that the merger dynamics follow the same mechanics as those of a single-phase flow, albeit with a density that must be adjusted to match the mixture density. >>

<< Lastly, highly inertial particles tend to fragment the vortex cores leading to murky merger dynamics. >>

# gst: complex flows by hairpin vortices behind hills with different scales

<< In the flow around protuberance, separation bubbles occur ahead and behind the protuberance, and a coherent vortex structure exists in the wake. In such a flow field, heat, substance, and momentum are actively transported by the vortex. (..) When multiple protuberances are set in the flow, the wakes of the protuberances interfere with each other, resulting in complicated flows. >>

<< This study performed a numerical analysis of the hairpin vortex and heat transport generated by the interference of the wakes behind two hills in a laminar boundary layer. In the case of hills with the same scale, the interference between hairpin vortices in the wake is more intensive than in the different-scale hills. When the hills with different scales are installed, hairpin vortices with different scales are periodically shed. >>

<< Regardless of the scale ratio of the hills, when the hill spacing in the spanwise direction is narrowed, the asymmetry of the hairpin vortex in the wake increases due to the interference between the wakes. At this time, the turbulence caused by the leg and the horn-shaped secondary vortex on the spanwise center side in the hairpin vortex increases, and heat transport around the hairpin vortex becomes active. >>

AA << have discovered human brain signals travelling across the outer layer of neural tissue that naturally arrange themselves to resemble swirling spirals. >>️

# gst: a flapping forward flight (among Papilio polytes and Kallima inachus)

<< The effect of wing shape on a forward-flying butterfly via decoupled factors of the wing-swept angle and the aspect ratio (AR) was investigated numerically. >>️

<< The results show that, through (AA) models, the effects of the wing-swept angle and AR were decoupled; both have distinct flow mechanisms and aerodynamic force trends and are consistent in the two butterfly species (Papilio polytes and Kallima inachus). For a fixed AR, a backward-swept wing increases lift and drag because of the enhanced attachment of the leading-edge vortex with increased strength of the wingtip vortex and the spanwise flow. For a fixed wing-swept angle, a small AR wing increases lift and decreases drag because of the large region of low pressure downstream and the wake-capture effect. Coupling these effects, the largest lift-to-drag ratio occurs for a forward-swept wing with the smallest AR. These results indicate that, in a flapping forward flight, sweeping a forewing forward relative to a hindwing is suitable for cruising. >>

# gst: pattern generation through turbulent cascades

<< Fully developed turbulence is a universal and scale-invariant chaotic state characterized by an energy cascade from large to small scales where the cascade is eventually arrested by dissipation. In this Letter, (AA) show how to harness these seemingly structureless turbulent cascades to generate patterns. Conceptually, pattern or structure formation entails a process of wavelength selection: patterns typically arise from the linear instability of a homogeneous state. By contrast, the mechanism (they) propose here is fully non-linear and triggered by a non-dissipative arrest of turbulent cascades. Instead of being dissipated, energy piles up at intermediate scales. Using a combination of theory and large-scale simulations, (AA) show that the tunable wavelength of these cascade-induced patterns is set by a non-dissipative transport coefficient called odd or gyro viscosity. This non-dissipative viscosity is ubiquitous in chiral systems (..). Beyond chiral fluids, cascade-induced pattern formation could occur in natural systems (..) as well as in industrial processes (..). >>

# gst: the physiological emergence and evolution of cell-spanning vortices (inside Drosophila oocytes).

<< Life in complex systems, such as cities and organisms, comes to a standstill when global coordination of mass, energy, and information flows is disrupted. Global coordination is no less important in single cells, especially in large oocytes and newly formed embryos, which commonly use fast fluid flows for dynamic reorganization of their cytoplasm. Here, (AA) combine theory, computing, and imaging to investigate such flows in the Drosophila oocyte, where streaming has been proposed to spontaneously arise from hydrodynamic interactions among cortically anchored microtubules loaded with cargo-carrying molecular motors. >>️

# gst: apropos of modulational instabilities, the case of vortex-ring quantum droplets in a radially-periodic potential.

FIG. 11: (Color online) Typical examples of stable nested patterns with soliton and vortex QDs (quantum droplets)  which were created in adjacent radial troughs. In panels (a1-b4) the pattern was created from the initial dynamical states with parameters (N,S,On) = (46,0,2) and (N,S,On) = (35,1,1) in the outer and inner troughs, respectively. In panels (c1-d4) the input was taken with parameter sets (N,S,On) = (120,1,3) and (N,S,On) = (46,0,2) in the outer and inner troughs.

AA << establish stability and characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) vortex ring-shaped quantum droplets (QDs) formed by binary Bose-Einstein condensates. >>️

<< another noteworthy option is to construct a two-ring complex in which one vortex-ring component is subject to the MI  (modulational instability), hence it is replaced by an azimuthal soliton (or maybe several solitons), (..), while the vortex component trapped in another potential trough avoids the azimuthal MI and remains essentially axisymmetric. >>️

<< Examples of such heterogeneous robust states, produced by simulations of Eq. (3), are displayed in Fig. 11. Panels 11(a1-b4) show a complex in which the MI takes place in the outer circular trough, producing an azimuthal soliton which performs rotary motion, while the inner vortex ring is  modulationally stable. An opposite example is produced in Figs. 11(c1-d4), where the outer vortex ring remains stable against azimuthal perturbations, while the MI creates a soliton exhibiting the rotary motion in the embedded (inner) circular trough. The rotation direction of the soliton is driven by the vorticity sign of the underlying QD (quantum droplet). It is relevant to mention that the multi-ring potential considered here holds different vortex-ring or azimuthal-soliton states nearly isolating them from each other. (..) An additional problem, which is left for subsequent analysis, is interplay between adjacent radial modes in the case when the separation between the adjacent rings is essentially smaller. >>️

# gst: behavior of microswimmers in a vortex with translational and rotational noise

AA << propose a theoretical model to investigate the dynamics of elongated microswimmers in elementary vortices, namely active particles in two- and three-dimensional rotlets. A deterministic model first reveals the existence of bounded orbits near the centre of the vortex and unbounded orbits elsewhere. (AA) further discover a conserved quantity of motion that allows (..) to map the phase space according to the type of the orbit (bounded vs unbounded). (They) next introduce translational and rotational noise into the system. Using a Fokker--Planck formalism, (AA) quantify the quality of trapping near the centre of the vortex by examining the probability of escape and the mean time of escape from the region of deterministically bounded orbits. (AA) finally show how to use these findings to formulate a prediction for the radius of the depletion zone, which compares favourably with the experiments of Sokolov and Aranson (2016). >>
