<< ️Many natural systems exhibit dynamics characterized by alternating phases or recurring sets of states. Describing the fluctuations of such systems over stochastic trajectories is necessary across diverse fields, from biological motors to quantum thermal machines. >>

<< ️In an accompanying Letter, (AA) introduced the notion of stochastic excursions−a framework to analyze out of equilibrium processes via sub-trajectories. Through counting observables, this framework captures finite-time fluctuations and trajectory-level behavior, which provides insights into thermodynamical trade-offs between thermodynamic quantities of interest, such as entropy production and dynamical activity. >>

<< ️In this work, (AA) enhance this formalism by providing a suite of technical results on how to efficiently compute excursion-related quantities. (Their) analytical results provide explicit formulas for general moments of counting variables and excursion duration, as well as their covariance and conditional moments. This noise-driven phenomenon can significantly impact processes such as cell differentiation and speciation in the presence of changing environmental conditions. >>

The growth phase is characterized by self-similar decorrelator spectra, but exhibits strong anisotropy: uncertainty spreads much more slowly along the stratification direction than horizontally, with the disparity increasing with stratification strength. >>

Markov and state-independent models of turbulence-induced stochasticity are developed, and their effects on a natural circulation loop operating in the chaotic regime are compared. >>

<< ️Stochasticity introduces considerable uncertainty into the duration of the initial chaotic transient but tends to accelerate it on average. An Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model of turbulent fluctuations is shown to produce results equivalent to a bootstrapped raw direct numerical simulation signal. >>

<< ️(AA) investigate the equilibration time to attain steady-state for a system of liquid molecules under boundary-driven planar Couette flow via nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation. >>

<< ️In particular, (They) examine the equilibration time for the two common types of boundary driven flow: one in which both walls slide with equal and opposite velocity, and the other in which one wall is fixed and the other moves with twice the velocity. Both flows give identical steady-state strain rates, and hence flow properties, but the transient behaviour is completely different. >>

<< ️(They) find that in the case of no-slip boundary conditions, the equilibration times for the counter-sliding walls flow are exactly 4 times faster than those of the single sliding wall system, and this is independent of the atomistic nature of the fluid, i.e., it is an entirely hydrodynamic feature. (They) also find that systems that exhibit slip have longer equilibration times in general and the ratio of equilibration times for the two types of boundary-driven flow is even more pronounced. >>

<< ️(AA) analyse the problem by decomposing a generic planar Couette flow into a linear sum of purely symmetric and antisymmetric flows. (They) find that the no-slip equilibration time is dominated by the slowest decaying eigenvalue of the solution to the Navier-Stokes equation. In the case of slip, the longest relaxation time is now dominated by the transient slip velocity response, which is longer than the no-slip response time. In contrast, fixational sampling that preceded a choice showed negligible history biases that were overcome quickly in favor of wider exploratory sampling. >>

<< Quantifying the exploratory value object features with a Parallel Belief States model of attention confirmed that exploratory fixational sampling was unaffected by reward history, while exploitative fixations that committed to a decision showed persistent target history biases. # gst: trade-off between coherence and dissipation for excitable phase oscillators.

<< Thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) bounds coherence in stochastic oscillatory systems. In this paper, (AA) show that both dynamical and thermodynamic bounds play important roles for the excitable oscillators, e.g. neurons. >>

<< Excitable systems such as neurons have distinctive coherence features compared with other oscillators having no excitability. >>️

AA << combined the well-established results, i.e. the fluctuation of the ISI (inter-spike-interval) limited by 1/3 and the coherence resonance phenomenon, together with the TUR developed in recent years to investigate the coherence in the excitable phase oscillators. (AA) find quite different trade-off relation in the subthreshold (excitable) region and superthreshold (oscillatory) region, separated by the SNIC (saddle-node on an invariant circle) bound but meanwhile lower bounded by the TUR. Furthermore, (They) found that there is an optimal entropy production corresponding to the maximum coherence, which could serve as an alternative interpretation of the coherence resonance. It implies that more entropy production does not necessarily result in higher accuracy of currents. >>️

<< The new technique focuses on two sources of error that arise from the approximations used to map the quantum system of interest to the analog quantum simulator. In a real-world simulator, these error sources are linked in a complex way, and individually minimizing each error can increase the overall uncertainty of a simulation. This analysis enabled the researchers to finely tune a simulation’s parameters to minimize its overall uncertainty and to maximize its precision. >>️
