# gst: superflows around corners.

<< ️(AA) investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of a two-dimensional superflow governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation passing over finite-size rectangular obstacles: an impenetrable wall and an impenetrable rectangular well. >>

<< ️Extending classical studies of vortex nucleation around smooth obstacles, (They) focus on the role of sharp corners in determining the onset of vortex nucleation. Using a combination of analytical techniques based on the Schwarz-Christoffel methods for potential flow and on numerical simulations, (They) show that local velocity amplification near sharp corners crucially controls the critical flow velocity for vortex nucleation. For both wall and well configurations, (They) identify analytically and theoretically the critical velocities as a function of the obstacle width and its height or depth, finding excellent agreement between the theory and numerical simulations. >>

<< ️(Their) results provide a simple  framework for understanding superflow stability past finite-size obstacles with sharp features, and they are directly relevant to experimentally realizable configurations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and related superfluid systems. >>

# gst: multi-cluster chimeras in phase oscillators with repulsive nonlocal coupling.

<< ️Local repulsive coupling tend to a desynchronize ensembles of globally coupled oscillators, but when the repulsive coupling is nonlocal, multi-cluster chimeras can result. In this case, several groups of synchronized oscillators (the so-called clusters) are formed, and these coexist with a set of desynchronized oscillators. >>

<< ️For phase oscillators on a ring with nonlocal piecewise linear repulsive coupling that also involves a phase lag, (AA) find that in the multi-cluster chimera state the synchronized clusters are either antiphase or in splay with respect to each other, namely the n consecutive synchronized clusters differ in phase by 2π/n. >>

<< ️This is in contrast to multi-cluster chimeras that are formed with nonlocal attractive coupling. The synchronized solutions are studied numerically as well as analytically and by analysing their stability, (They) identify the parameter regions where these can be observed. (Their) numerical results are validated by dimensional reduction using the Ott-Antonsen analysis. >>

# gst: from chaos to synchrony in recurrent excitatory-inhibitory networks with target-specific inhibition.

<< ️Biological neural networks can operate in qualitatively distinct dynamical regimes, and transitions between these regimes are thought to underlie changes in computation and behavior. The seminal work of Sompolinsky, Crisanti, and Sommers (SCS) showed that random recurrent networks undergo a transition from quiescence to asynchronous chaos, establishing a paradigmatic link between random connectivity, dynamical instability, and internally generated fluctuations in neural circuits. >>

<< ️Here, (AA) extend this framework to two-population firing-rate networks with segregated excitatory and inhibitory neurons and target-specific inhibitory couplings that break excitation--inhibition balance. Using dynamical mean-field theory, (They) derive self-consistent equations for the macroscopic mean activities and autocorrelations, together with stability criteria distinguishing mean-driven and fluctuation-driven instabilities. (They) show that target-specific inhibition organizes the phase diagram into three qualitative classes: inhibition-dominated or strictly balanced networks display only quiescent activity and asynchronous chaos; excitation-dominated networks display persistent activity together with either synchronous chaos with non-vanishing mean activity or coherent oscillations, depending on the stability-matrix eigenvalues. >>

<< Crucially, coherent oscillations do not coexist with chaotic fluctuations around the periodic mean trajectory; rather, their onset suppresses the chaotic component, reminiscent of input-induced suppression of chaos. These results generalize SCS theory to recurrent networks with explicit excitatory--inhibitory structure and identify target-specific inhibition as a key control parameter for large-scale neural dynamics. >>

# gst: delay-induced chimera transitions via mode selection in a multiplex FitzHugh Nagumo network.

<< ️(AA) investigate delay-induced collective dynamics in a two-layer multiplex FitzHugh Nagumo network with nonlocal intra layer coupling and delayed inter layer interactions. While delay effects are often treated as secondary, (They) show that deterministic inter-layer delay alone can act as a control mechanism for spatial coherence. >>

<< ️Through systematic numerical simulations, (They) observe a clear transition as the delay parameter increases: fragmented incoherence evolves into chimera-like partial coherence, and eventually into a coherent traveling-wave state. This transition is consistently captured by spatial snapshots, space-time plots, and mean phase velocity profiles. >>

<< ️To explain this behavior, (They) analyze the stability of spatial Fourier modes and show that the delay term introduces a mode-dependent exponential factor in the characteristic equation. This term induces non-monotonic changes in modal stability, effectively acting as a mode-selection mechanism: intermediate delays selectively destabilize a subset of modes, producing chimera-like coexistence, while larger delays suppress incoherent modes and restore global coherence. >>

<< ️(Their) results demonstrate that inter-layer delay provides a simple and robust mechanism for controlling pattern formation in multiplex excitable networks, offering new insight into delay driven synchronization phenomena. >>

# gst: quantum kicked top; a paradigmatic model

<< ️The quantum kicked top (QKT) is one of the most widely studied models in quantum chaos, providing a minimal yet powerful framework for exploring the relationship between classical nonlinear dynamics and quantum behavior. Unlike many chaotic systems with infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, the QKT possesses a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, making it analytically and numerically controllable while still showing a rich dynamical phenomena. >>

<< ️(AA) present a comprehensive introduction to the QKT as a paradigmatic model of quantum chaos. Starting from the classical kicked top, (They) derive the discrete nonlinear map governing the dynamics on the unit sphere and analyze its phase space structure through fixed points, stability analysis, bifurcations and Lyapunov exponents. (They) then discuss the role of symmetries, including rotational and time-reversal symmetry, and how their breaking modifies the dynamics. >>

<< ️By linking classical phase space structures with quantum dynamical indicators, the QKT provides a clear setting to investigate the emergence of chaotic behavior in the semiclassical limit. The chapter, therefore, highlights the quantum kicked top as a bridge between nonlinear classical dynamics, quantum chaos and modern quantum information science. >>

# gst: stability of particle clusters bound by capillary bridges in extensional flow.

<< ️Capillary suspensions are commonly encountered in a wide array of applications, but their stability in flow is not fully understood. Here, (AA) investigate the stability of a two-particle capillary cluster in extensional flow using a combination of theory and experiments. >>

<< ️A linear stability analysis reveals the existence of a critical capillary number Ca_𝑐=(8/45)⁢cos⁡𝜃 that depends only on the contact angle 𝜃. For Ca>Ca_𝑐, clusters are unconditionally unstable, regardless of initial conditions. For Ca <Ca_𝑐, a nonlinear analysis shows the existence of a Ca-dependent minimum interparticle separation beyond which breakup occurs. >>

<< ️The analytical model further supports the experimentally observed slowdown in relaxation dynamics. Theoretical predictions are supported by precise flow experiments using a Stokes trap, where active flow modulation is used to stabilize an initially unstable cluster in extensional flow. Overall, these (AA) results provide a quantitative understanding of capillary suspension stability in flow. >>

# gst: apropos of ab.normal criticalities, a hypothetical scenario of non-normal route to chaos.

<< ️Deterministic chaos is commonly associated with spectral criticality: exponential sensitivity is expected when Jacobian eigenvalues exceed unity in parts of the attractor, producing the local expansion that offsets contraction elsewhere. (AA) show that this paradigm is incomplete in dimensions d>1.  >>

<< ️(They) construct a bounded 3D dynamical system whose Jacobian is pointwise spectrally contracting, namely all instantaneous eigenvalues remain strictly inside the stability region, yet the system develops a positive maximal Lyapunov exponent and undergoes a transition to chaos as a non-normality index increases at fixed spectral radius. The mechanism relies on the repeated regeneration of transient non-normal amplification through endogenous switching that reinjects trajectories into amplifying non-orthogonal directions. >>

<< ️Although demonstrated here for a discrete-time map, the mechanism is geometric and applies more broadly to deterministic dynamical systems. These results show that chaos can emerge without spectral criticality and identify non-normality as an independent route to deterministic chaos. >>

# gst: multi-ring necklace vortex solitons in Kerr nonlinear media with azimuthally modulated Bessel potentials.

<< ️(AA) address the existence, stability, and dynamics of single-ring and multi-ring vorticity-carrying necklace solitons under the action of the Kerr nonlinearity and a Bessel-lattice potential modulated in the azimuthal direction. The model may be realized in the spatial domain for bulk optical waveguides, the spatiotemporal domain for optical cavities, and for effectively two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. The setup supports single- and multi-ring necklace vortex patterns, including monopoles, dipoles, tripoles, quadrupoles, pentapoles, sextupoles, octupoles, and 12-poles. >>

<< ️In contrast with the inherent instability of conventional vortex beams with high topological charges (winding numbers), vortex necklace-shaped solitons with large winding numbers are found to be stable in the present setup. In particular, octupoles exhibit stable breathing dynamics, and 12-pole necklaces with high winding numbers may be stable. >>

<< ️These (AA) findings provide a new way for generating stable vortex necklaces, offering a vast potential for manipulations of complex spatiotemporal light fields. >>

# gst: spatiotemporal noise stabilizes unbounded diversity in strongly-competitive communities.

<< ️Classical ecological models predict that large, diverse communities should be unstable, presenting a central challenge to explaining the stable biodiversity seen in nature. (AA) revisit this long-standing problem by extending the generalized Lotka-Volterra model to include both spatial structure and environmental fluctuations across space and time.  >>

<< ️(They) find that neither space nor environmental noise alone can resolve the tension between diversity and stability, but that their combined effects permit arbitrarily many species to stably coexist despite strongly disordered competitive interactions. (They) analytically characterize the noise-induced transition to coexistence, showing that spatiotemporal noise drives an anomalous scaling of abundance fluctuations, known empirically as Taylor's law. >>

<< ️At the community level, this manifests as an effective sublinear self-inhibition that renders the community stable and asymptotically neutral in the high-diversity limit. Spatiotemporal noise thus provides a novel resolution to the diversity-stability paradox and a generic mechanism by which complex communities can persist. >>

# gst: phase-controlled elastic, inelastic, and coalescent collisions of two-dimensional flat-top solitons.

<< ️(AA) investigate elastic, inelastic, and coalescent collisions between two-dimensional flat-top solitons supported by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Numerical simulations reveal distinct collision regimes ranging from nearly elastic scattering to strongly inelastic interactions leading to long-lived merged states. >>

<< ️(They) demonstrate that the transition between these regimes is primarily controlled by the relative phase of the solitons at the collision point, with out-of-phase collisions suppressing overlap and in-phase collisions promoting strong interaction. >>

<< ️Kinetic-energy diagnostics are introduced to quantitatively characterize collision outcomes and to identify phase- and separation-dependent windows of elasticity. To interpret the observed dynamics, (They) extract effective phase-dependent interaction potentials from collision trajectories, providing a mechanical picture of attraction and repulsion between flat-top solitons. The stability of merged states formed after strongly inelastic collisions is explained by their lower energetic cost, arising from interfacial energetics, where a balance between internal pressure and edge tension plays a central role. A variational analysis based on direct energy minimization supports this picture by revealing robust energetic minima associated with stationary two-dimensional flat-top solitons. >>

# gst: elastoplastic modelling of cyclic shear deformation of amorphous solids.

IMG - Per site elastic energy evolution for poorly vs well annealed samples.

<< ️(AA) develop an energy-landscape based elasto-plastic model to understand the behaviour of amorphous solids under uniform and cyclic shear. Amorphous solids are modeled as being composed of mesoscopic sub-volumes, each of which may occupy states - termed mesostates -- drawn from a specified distribution. The energies of the mesostates under stress free conditions determine their stability range with respect to applied strain, and their plastic strain, at which they are stress free, forms an important additional property. Under applied global strain, mesostates that reach their stability limits transition to other permissible mesostates. Barring such transitions, which encompass plastic deformations that the solid may undergo, mesostates are treated as exhibiting linear elastic behavior, and the interactions between mesoscopic blocks are treated using the finite element method.  >>

<< ️The (AA) model reproduces known phenomena under uniform and cyclic shear, such as the brittle-to-ductile crossover with annealing and the Bauschinger effect for uniform shear, qualitative features of the yielding diagram under cyclic shear including the change in yielding behaviour with the degree of annealing, across a `threshold level', and dynamic phenomena such as the divergence of failure times on approach to the yield point and the non-monotonic evolution of the local yield rate.  >>

<< ️(AA) investigate the convective stability of a thin, infinite fluid layer with a rectangular cross-section, subject to imposed heat fluxes at the top and bottom and fixed temperature along the vertical sides. The instability threshold depends on the Prandtl number as well as the normalized flux difference (f) and decreases with the aspect ratio (ϵ), following a ϵf^−1 power law. >>

# gst: experimental observation of hidden multistability in nonlinear systems.

<< ️Multistability, the coexistence of multiple stable states, is a cornerstone of nonlinear dynamical systems, governing their equilibrium, tunability, and emergent complexity. Recently, the concept of hidden multistability, where certain stable states evade detection via conventional continuous parameter sweeping, has garnered increasing attention due to its elusive nature and promising applications.  >>

# gst: apropos of waves that escape trapping; on internal wave whispering gallery modes in channels and critical-slope wave attractors.

<< ️Internal waves are an important feature of stratified fluids, both in oceanic and lake basins and in other settings. Many works have been published on the generic feature of internal wave trapping onto planar wave attractors and super-attractors in 2D & 3D and the exceptional class of standing global internal wave modes. >>

<< ️However, most of these works did not deal with waves that escape trapping. By using continuous symmetries (AA) analytically prove the existence of internal wave Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs), internal waves that propagate continuously without getting trapped by attractors. WGMs neutral stability with respect to different perturbations enable whispering gallery beams, a continuum of rays propagating together coherently. The systems' continuous symmetries also enable projection onto 2D planes that yield effective 2D billiards preserving the original dynamics. >>

<< ️By examining rays deviating from these WGMs in parabolic channels (They) discover a new type of wave attractor which is located along the channel instead of across it as in previous works. This new wave attractor leads to a re-understanding of WGMs as sitting at the border between the two basins of attraction. >>

# gst: role of evaporation in stability of foam films and foams.

<< ️Understanding the stability of foam films and foams remains a challenge, despite the considerable efforts provided by the scientific community to refine their physical descriptions. This persistent difficulty underscores the interplay of various complex factors. # ecol: stabilization of macroscopic dynamics by fine-grained disorder in many-species ecosystems.

<< ️Models for complex, heterogeneous systems such as ecological communities vary in the level of organization they describe. When the dynamics at the species level is unknown, one typically resorts to heuristic "macroscopic" models that capture relationships among a few degrees of freedom, e.g., groups of similar species, and commonly display out-of-equilibrium dynamics. These models, however, exactly reflect the species-level "microscopic" dynamics only when microscopic heterogeneity can be neglected. >>

<< ️Here, (AA) address the robustness of such macroscopic descriptions to the addition of disordered microscopic interactions. While disorder is known to destabilize equilibria at the microscopic level, leading to asynchronous (typically chaotic) fluctuations, (They) show that it can also stabilize synchronous species fluctuations driven by macroscopic structure. >>

<< ️(AA) analytically find the conditions for the existence of heterogeneity-stabilized equilibria and relate their stability to a mismatch in the time scales of individual species. This may shed light on the empirical observation that many-species ecosystems often appear stable despite highly diverse and potentially destabilizing interactions between species and functional groups. >>

# gst: H.v.Foerster's principle revisited, 'allostasis' theory reconsiders 'order through noise'

<< ️The notion of homeostasis typically conceptualises biological and artificial systems as maintaining stability by resisting deviations caused by environmental and social perturbations.
