# gst: formation of mechanical rogue waves.

<< ️Rogue waves, characterized by their abrupt and extreme localization in space and time, have evolved from maritime folklore to subjects of intense study across diverse fields, from hydrodynamics and nonlinear optics to plasmas and condensed matter physics. In mechanical systems, however, experimental realization remains elusive despite theoretical and numerical predictions. This gap stems from the stringent requirements for controllable nonlinearity, the high-fidelity initialization of the system, and the necessity to overcome inherent energy dissipation. >>

<< ️Here, (AA) report the experimental formation of mechanical rogue waves in a precisely engineered one-dimensional metamaterial lattice with tailored nonlinearity and minimal dissipative losses. Using a precision electromagnetic release system, (They) prescribe initial strain profiles that trigger a transition from dispersive decay to extreme wave focusing. >>

<< ️(Their) parametric analysis reveals that the emergence of these extreme events is strictly contingent upon a synergy between high nonlinearity and a broad spatial energy reservoir within the initial seed. Crucially, neither factor alone is sufficient to overcome dispersion and trigger the observed focusing. >>

<< ️These findings establish a robust platform for studying transient nonlinear wave focusing phenomena in mechanical systems and offer insights for harnessing extreme wave localization for applications such as energy harvesting, waveguiding, and mechanical signal processing. >>

# gst: extreme (rogue) waves; from theory to experiments.

<< ️In this Chapter, (AA) review key theoretical and experimental advances in the study of extreme nonlinear wave events, called rogue waves (RWs), in both single-component attractively interacting and two-component repulsive mixtures of ultracold quantum gases. Starting from the exact rational solutions of the integrable focusing nonlinear Schroedinger model, the hierarchy of RW solutions is exemplified. These range from the Peregrine soliton (PS) and, related to it, the destabilization into a multi-peak cascade of PSs dubbed "Christmas-tree", to the Akhmediev breather, and Kuznetsov-Ma soliton as well as higher-order RWs. Emphasis is placed on their controllable dynamical emergence and characteristics in non-integrable quantum many-body systems described by Gross-Pitaevskii models and extensions thereof through different protocols such as modulational instability, gradient catastrophe, and dam-break flows. >>

<< ️(They) further discuss how immiscible particle-imbalanced repulsive mixtures can be cast into effective attractive single-component environments capable of hosting RWs. Next, state-of-the-art experimental techniques are summarized within the ultracold realm that can be utilized to realize solitary waves, modulational instability, dispersive shock waves and RWs including the very recent first experimental observation of the PS, enabled through engineered effective focusing interactions and precise dynamical triggering. >>

<< ️Observations of these extreme events in water waves, nonlinear optics and beyond are also outlined, highlighting their broader relevance and potential of emergence in disparate physical settings. (Their) exposition aims at showcasing ultracold atomic gases as versatile platforms for controllably generating and probing extreme nonlinear events, among others, in the quantum realm across integrable and non-integrable settings. >>

# evol: fluctuating environments favor extreme dormancy strategies and penalize intermediate ones.

<< ️Dormancy is a widespread adaptive strategy that enables populations to persist in fluctuating environments, yet how its benefits depend on the temporal structure of environmental variability remains unclear. (AA) examine how dormancy interacts with environmental correlation times using a delayed-logistic model in which dormant individuals reactivate after a fixed lag while birth rates fluctuate under temporally correlated stochasticity. >>

<< ️Numerical simulations and analytical calculations show that the combination of demographic memory and colored multiplicative noise generates a strongly non-monotonic dependence of fitness on dormancy duration, with three distinct performance regimes. Very short dormancy maximizes linear growth but amplifies fluctuations and extinction risk. Very long dormancy buffers environmental variability, greatly increasing mean extinction times despite slower growth. Strikingly, (They) find a broad band of intermediate dormancy durations that is maladaptive, simultaneously reducing both growth and persistence due to a mismatch between delay times and environmental autocorrelation. >>

<< ️An evolutionary agent-based model confirms bistability between short- and long-dormancy strategies, which avoid intermediate lag times and evolve toward stable extremes. >>

<< ️These (AA) results show that dormancy duration is not merely a life-history parameter but an adaptive mechanism tuned to environmental timescales, and that intermediate "dangerous middle" strategies can be inherently disfavored. More broadly, this work identifies a generic mechanism by which demographic delays interacting with correlated environmental variability produce a non-monotonic fitness landscape that selects for extreme timing strategies. >>

# gst: the way bubbles gallop.

<< ️Bubbles are more than fleeting pockets of air trapped in liquid: they exhibit an ever-expanding repertoire of intriguing behaviors. From da Vinci's sketches of their swirling paths to modern-day studies of their erratic dances under acoustic waves, the rich dynamics of bubbles have long captured the attention of everyday observers, engineers, and scientists alike. When exposed to periodic sound waves, bubbles can shift from regular pulsations to rapid zigzagging, mimicking the randomness of Brownian motion. Under sudden pressure changes, they may collapse violently, producing cavitation—intense shock waves capable of damaging solid surfaces. In extreme cases, the implosion may become so intense that the bubble emits a spark of light. >>

<< ️Bubbles can also challenge common intuition: they may appear to violate Archimedes' principle, sinking against gravity in oscillating fluids, and carbonated drinks. Despite centuries of explorations, new and often surprising bubble phenomena continue to emerge. One such example is the recently discovered “galloping” bubble, introduced in (AA) recent publication. Here, (They) showcase this new mechanism of bubble locomotion, highlighting its rich dynamics and striking visual appeal. >>

# gst: extreme vertical drafts as drivers of Lagrangian dispersion in stably stratified turbulent flows.

<< ️The dispersion of Lagrangian particle pairs is a fundamental process in turbulence, with implications for mixing, transport, and the statistical properties of particles in geophysical and environmental flows. While classical theories describe pair dispersion through scaling laws related to energy cascades, extreme events in turbulent flows can significantly alter these dynamics. This is especially important in stratified flows, where intermittency manifests itself also as strong updrafts and downdrafts. >>

<< ️In this study, (AA) investigate the influence of extreme events on the relative dispersion of particle pairs in stably stratified turbulence. Using numerical simulations (They) analyze the statistical properties of pair separation across different regimes, and quantify deviations from classical Richardson scaling. (Their) results highlight the role of extreme drafts in accelerating dispersion. >>

# gst: active drive towards elastic spinodals

<< Active matter, exemplified by adaptive living materials such as the actomyosin cytoskeleton, can navigate material parameter space, leading to unconventional mechanical responses. In particular, it can self-drive toward elastic spinodal regimes, where inhomogeneous floppy modes induce elastic degeneracy and enable a controlled interplay between rigidity loss and recovery. Proximity to such marginal states leads to stress localization and the formation of force chains that can be actively assembled and disassembled. >>

# gst: apropos of critical transitions, a new approach to extreme events.

FIG. 1. Dynamics of excitable complex networks [coupling topologies: random (RN); small-world (SW); scale-free (SF); all-to-all (complete; CP)].

<< Unexpected and often irreversible shifts in the state or the dynamics of a complex system often accumulate in extreme events with likely disastrous impact on the system and its environment. Detection, understanding, and possible prediction of such critical transitions are thus of paramount importance across a variety of scientific fields. >>

<< The rather modest improvement achieved so far may be due previous research mostly concentrating on either particular subsystems, considered to be of vital importance for the generating mechanism of a critical transition, or on the system as a whole. # gst: multiparticle dispersion in rotating-stratified turbulent flows (when stratification increases turbulent fluctuations may not be weaker)

AA << study the relative movement of groups of two (pairs) and four (tetrahedra) Lagrangian particles using direct numerical simulations of the stably stratified Boussinsesq equations, with Brunt-Väisälä frequency 𝑁 and Coriolis parameter 𝑓. >>

<< In all cases considered, (AA) demonstrate that the relative particle motion differs depending on whether dispersion is considered forward or backward in time, although the asymmetry becomes less pronounced when stratification and rotation increase. On the other hand, the strong fluctuations in the dispersion between two particles become more extreme when 𝑁 and 𝑓  increase. (They) also find evidence for the formation of shear layers, which become more pronounced as 𝑁 and 𝑓  become larger. Finally, (They) show that the irreversibility on the dispersion of a set of particles initially forming a regular tetrahedron becomes weaker when the influence of stratification and rotation increases, a property that (They) relate to that of the perceived rate-of-strain tensor. >>️

<< Unexpectedly, (AA) observe that the higher moments of particle separation, in particular the normalized fourth-order central moment of the separation (the kurtosis Kr) is an increasing function of stratification and rotation. This is surprising, as when stratification increases the turbulent fluctuations are expected to be weaker, (..) >>️

# gst: black swan ... or black rabbit?

<<
In his book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, Nassim Nicholas Taleb explores the profound and unpredictable events that shape our world, which he calls “Black Swans.” These events are characterized by three main features: they are rare and unpredictable, they have an extreme impact, and in hindsight, they often seem explainable or inevitable. Taleb argues that our world is increasingly shaped by these Black Swans, from financial crises to technological breakthroughs, and yet humans are inherently ill equipped to anticipate them due to cognitive biases and reliance on standard predictive models. By analogy with this term, (AA) have named Black Rabbits events that exhibit all the external characteristics of a Black Swan but are entirely determined by the state of the system itself. These phenomena are not artificial examples or mere curiosities; they exist wherever hyperbolic meadows are found. When we witness a social catastrophe or a financial crisis, could it be not a stray Black Swan but a local Black Rabbit? How can one determine in advance that a system is pregnant with a crisis? What indicators can be used? Is it possible to control the system to prevent it from becoming unstable? These are intriguing questions, perhaps too complex, especially when dealing not with simple mathematical models but with real-world systems. Yet, we must still strive to find answers to them.

# gst: intermittency of bubble deformation in turbulence.

<< The deformation of finite-sized bubbles in intense turbulence exhibits complex geometries beyond simple spheroids as the bubbles exchange energy with the surrounding eddies across a wide range of scales. (AA)  study investigates deformation via the velocity of the most stretched tip of the deformed bubble in three dimensions, as the tip extension results from the compression of the rest of the interface by surrounding eddies. >>

<< The results show that the power spectrum based on the tip velocity exhibits a scaling akin to that of the Lagrangian statistics of fluid elements, but decays with a distinct timescale and magnitude modulated by the Weber number based on the bubble size. This indicates that the interfacial energy is primarily siphoned from eddies of similar sizes as the bubble. >>

<< Moreover, the tip velocity appears much more intermittent than the velocity increment, and its distribution near the extreme tails can be explained by the proposed model that accounts for the fact that small eddies with sufficient energy can contribute to extreme deformation. >>

<< These findings provide a framework for understanding the energy transfer between deformable objects and multiscale eddies in intense turbulence. >>

# life: landing on a swinging perch: peach-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) prefer extremes.

<< Birds frequently must land safely and accurately on moving branches or power lines, and seemingly accomplish such maneuvers with acrobatic precision. To examine how birds target and land successfully on moving supports, (AA) investigated how peach-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) approach and land on a swinging perch.  >>️

<< In support of (AA) hypothesis for stable landings, lovebirds timed their landings in a majority of trials (51.3%), when the perch was approaching either extreme of its motion with its velocity nearing zero (27.5% in the same direction as the bird’s approach – SDs, and 23.8% in the opposite direction to the bird’s approach – ODs). As a result, lovebirds exhibited a robust bimodal strategy for timing their landing to the phase of the swinging perch. Less commonly, lovebirds landed when the perch was moving at high velocity either toward the bird’s approach (12.3%) or in the same direction as the bird’s approach (11.5%); with the remainder (21.9%) of trials distributed over a broad range of swing phases. >>️
