# gst: black swan ... or black rabbit?

<<
In his book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, Nassim Nicholas Taleb explores the profound and unpredictable events that shape our world, which he calls “Black Swans.” These events are characterized by three main features: they are rare and unpredictable, they have an extreme impact, and in hindsight, they often seem explainable or inevitable. Taleb argues that our world is increasingly shaped by these Black Swans, from financial crises to technological breakthroughs, and yet humans are inherently ill equipped to anticipate them due to cognitive biases and reliance on standard predictive models. By analogy with this term, (AA) have named Black Rabbits events that exhibit all the external characteristics of a Black Swan but are entirely determined by the state of the system itself. These phenomena are not artificial examples or mere curiosities; they exist wherever hyperbolic meadows are found. When we witness a social catastrophe or a financial crisis, could it be not a stray Black Swan but a local Black Rabbit? How can one determine in advance that a system is pregnant with a crisis? What indicators can be used? Is it possible to control the system to prevent it from becoming unstable? These are intriguing questions, perhaps too complex, especially when dealing not with simple mathematical models but with real-world systems. Yet, we must still strive to find answers to them.

# gst: intermittency of bubble deformation in turbulence.

<< The deformation of finite-sized bubbles in intense turbulence exhibits complex geometries beyond simple spheroids as the bubbles exchange energy with the surrounding eddies across a wide range of scales. (AA)  study investigates deformation via the velocity of the most stretched tip of the deformed bubble in three dimensions, as the tip extension results from the compression of the rest of the interface by surrounding eddies. >>

<< The results show that the power spectrum based on the tip velocity exhibits a scaling akin to that of the Lagrangian statistics of fluid elements, but decays with a distinct timescale and magnitude modulated by the Weber number based on the bubble size. This indicates that the interfacial energy is primarily siphoned from eddies of similar sizes as the bubble. >>

<< Moreover, the tip velocity appears much more intermittent than the velocity increment, and its distribution near the extreme tails can be explained by the proposed model that accounts for the fact that small eddies with sufficient energy can contribute to extreme deformation. >>

<< These findings provide a framework for understanding the energy transfer between deformable objects and multiscale eddies in intense turbulence. >>

# life: landing on a swinging perch: peach-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) prefer extremes.

<< Birds frequently must land safely and accurately on moving branches or power lines, and seemingly accomplish such maneuvers with acrobatic precision. To examine how birds target and land successfully on moving supports, (AA) investigated how peach-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) approach and land on a swinging perch.  >>️

<< In support of (AA) hypothesis for stable landings, lovebirds timed their landings in a majority of trials (51.3%), when the perch was approaching either extreme of its motion with its velocity nearing zero (27.5% in the same direction as the bird’s approach – SDs, and 23.8% in the opposite direction to the bird’s approach – ODs). As a result, lovebirds exhibited a robust bimodal strategy for timing their landing to the phase of the swinging perch. Less commonly, lovebirds landed when the perch was moving at high velocity either toward the bird’s approach (12.3%) or in the same direction as the bird’s approach (11.5%); with the remainder (21.9%) of trials distributed over a broad range of swing phases. >>️

# gst: extreme events in two-coupled chaotic oscillators.

This AA study << focuses on the emergence of extreme events in a system of diffusively and bidirectionally two coupled Rössler oscillators and unraveling the mechanism behind the genesis of extreme events. (AA) find the appearance of extreme events in three different observables: average velocity, synchronization error, and one transverse directional variable to the synchronization manifold. >>

<< The emergence of extreme events in average velocity variables happens due to the occasional in-phase synchronization. The on-off intermittency plays for the crucial role in the genesis of extreme events in the synchronization error dynamics and in the transverse directional variable to the synchronization manifold. The bubble transition of the chaotic attractor due to the on-off intermittency is illustrated for the transverse directional variable. >>

AA << investigate the temporal dynamics of the Ikeda Map with Balanced Gain and Loss and in the presence of feedback loops with saturation nonlinearity. # phys: a quantum gravity hypothesis on infalling matter (hunting for extreme Kerr black holes)

<< Quantum gravity refers to a group of theories—string theory, for example—that aims to reconcile the microscopic world of quantum physics with the macroscopic world of general relativity. >>

<< Now theoretical work by Grant N.  Remmen (et al) shows that celestial objects called extremal Kerr black holes are highly sensitive to quantum gravity. >>

<< A Kerr black hole is a rotating, electrically neutral black hole. It is said to be extremal if it has the highest possible angular momentum that is compatible with its mass.  Extremal Kerr black holes have yet to be detected, but many theories predict their existence. >>

They << point out that quantum corrections to general relativity would provide specific contributions to a quantity called the effective action, which describes the dynamics of a gravitational field. (..) under quantum gravity, the event horizon would develop curvature singularities—regions where the gravitational field is infinitely strong. >>

<< the next step is to hunt for extremal Kerr black holes and to try to detect these curvature singularities through their effect on infalling matter. >>

# jazz: Eastside Romp. Jeff Parker (gui), Eric Revis (b), Nasheet Waits (d).

<< In May 2016, guitarist Jeff Parker, double bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Nasheet Waits spent a single day recording in a Pasadena studio. The seven tunes they cut appear on Eastside Romp. Mixed in 2018, it sat on a shelf for four more years. (..) No one except the creators know why it took six long years for this relaxed yet canny set to arrive, but its appearance adds immeasurably to the mystique and inventive creativity of these three musicians. >> Thom Jurek (T.J.)

- Drunkard's Lullaby
<< "Drunkard's Lullaby" is a group improvisation, laden with guitar effects, knotty bass vamps, and dialogic conversation between snare, hi-hat, and kick drum. Parker's abstracted soloing is saturated in distortion, and it short-circuits, staggering his already jagged lines, creating a barely restrained sense of power. The rhythm section intersects and interlocks in detailed, propulsive conversation as the guitar travels afield, adding more frenetic yet glitchy notes and layers of feedback. >> (T.J.)

- Wait
<< "Wait," the album's longest cut, was composed by the guitarist. It commences as a dirge led by Revis playing vamped chords. He establishes a circular vamp as Parker points at his changes and Waits dances limpidly on his tom-toms in 4/4. The languid lyric line crisscrosses post-bop, Spanish-tinged modalism, and blues. Parker moves between melody and angular improv as his bandmates respond with empathy, highlighting and expanding the reach of his labyrinthine harmonic lines. As a perfect complement, Waits offers a studio version of his oft-performed nugget "Between Nothingness and Infinity." Paraphrasing the title of 1973's live Mahavishnu Orchestra album Between Nothingness & Eternity, he frames a musical narrative that emerges directly out of Parker's deeply moving ballad-esque playing, adding textural airiness, rhythmic spaciousness, and harmonic depth to its melody. >> (T.J.)

- Similar Limits
<< Opener "Similar Limits" is the set's only cover. Composed by the late alto saxophonist Marion Brown, it originally appeared on 1967's Porto Novo. The trio keep the iconic, Monk-esque intro after a brief roll from Waits. Parker and Revis play the staggered melodic intro as Waits rolls, fills, and accents all over the kit. As the bassist expands the tune's harmonic reach, Parker explores the underside with great sensitivity and swing. >> (T.J.)️

# astro: eight new echoing black hole binaries (in Milky Way)

<< Scattered across our Milky Way galaxy are tens of millions of black holes—immensely strong gravitational wells of spacetime, from which infalling matter, and even light, can never escape. Black holes are dark by definition, except on the rare occasions when they feed. As a black hole pulls in gas and dust from an orbiting star, it can give off spectacular bursts of X-ray light that bounce and echo off the inspiraling gas, briefly illuminating a black hole's extreme surroundings. >>

# gst: liquid–liquid phase transition, the two forms of liquid water (mixed with the natural antifreeze trehalose)

<< Liquids are structurally disordered, so it’s not immediately obvious how they can support two distinct structures with different densities. But that does seem to be possible for liquids in which some degree of directional bonding, such as hydrogen bonds between adjacent water molecules, makes distinct local structures possible. Liquid–liquid transitions have been reported, for example, in silicon, gallium, phosphorus and silicates. But finding one in supercooled water has proved very challenging. There have been previous claimed observations of a liquid–liquid transition in aqueous solutions at ambient pressure, (..) where the solute, such as the sugar glycerol, sometimes used as a cryoprotectant, lowers the freezing point. But such claims have been disputed.(..) Other researchers have reported liquid-like behaviour as the two well-established high- and low-density forms of amorphous (glass-like) ice interconvert. (..) >>

<< In 2014 Yoshiharu Suzuki (..) working with veteran water researcher Osamu Mishima, reported possible signs of a liquid–liquid transition, ending in a critical point where the two liquid states become indistinguishable, in emulsified, supercooled solutions of glycerol. (..) They saw signs of two distinct disordered states with different densities at a temperature of 150K. But there was no direct evidence that both were liquids, rather than amorphous ice. >>

<< Suzuki has now explored the same approach using trehalose as the solute – a sugar produced as a natural cryoprotectant by some organisms, such as insects, that experience extreme cold, to prevent their blood from freezing. He pressurised dilute emulsified solutions to about 0.6GPa at a range of temperatures below 159K, and then decompressed them again.  >>

<< Such hysteresis – whereby the density jumps at different pressures on compression and decompression – is normal for a first-order transition where a parameter such as density changes discontinuously. It reflects the fact that the transition has to start with the chance formation of a ‘nucleus’ of the new phase, which then grows. >>

<< Suzuki is not yet sure why trehalose stabilises water so well against crystallisation, compared with glycerol – but this might help explain why life uses it as an antifreeze. >>

# behav: unfrequent events under radical uncertainty; rats tend to avoid black swan situations.

AA << present a novel experimental design that aims at measuring the extent to which animal subjects are sensitive to rare and extreme events and, in addition, how rats respond to those very unfrequent events under radical uncertainty. (..) the novelty of (AA) design is that it provides two direct measures that help interpreting (..) behavioral data: Total Sensitivity to Rare and Extreme Events, and One-sided Sensitivity to Rare and Extreme Events with Black-Swan Avoidance/Jackpot-Seeking behaviors as limiting cases. >>️

<< First, most rats (..) can be grouped into a moderate to high Total Sensitivity group. This means that most rats diversify their choices across options in such a way that they more often rely on convex ones than on concave ones overall. Therefore, they tend to seek extreme gains/Jackpots and to avoid extreme losses/ Black Swans. In addition, most rats (..) tend to exhibit Black Swan Avoidance, which indicates that, given Total Sensitivity, they tend to try more often to avoid Black Swans than to seek Jackpots. (AA) interpret such a behavior as significant aversion towards uncertainty about rare and extreme losses.  >>️

<< all rats diversify their choices across a set of options, which is reminiscent of observed behaviors such as, for example, bet-hedging in animals and financial portfolio strategies used by humans >>

# life: some scientists hypothesize the possibility of (A) traveling faster than light, (B) visiting the interior of a black hole, (C) being already under observation by alien entities.

(A) traveling faster than light

<< Lentz (Erik Lentz. https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6382/abe692 ) proposes one such way we might be able to do this, thanks to what he calls a new class of hyper-fast solitons – a kind of wave that maintains its shape and energy while moving at a constant velocity (and in this case, a velocity faster than light). According to Lentz's theoretical calculations, these hyper-fast soliton solutions can exist within general relativity, and are sourced purely from positive energy densities, meaning there's no need to consider exotic negative- energy- density sources that haven't yet been verified. (..) With sufficient energy, configurations of these solitons could function as 'warp bubbles', capable of superluminal motion, and theoretically enabling an object to pass through space-time while shielded from extreme tidal forces. >>

(B) visiting the interior of a black hole

Keeping in mind that nothing can escape the gravitational pull beyond the event horizon, the in-falling person would not be able to send any information about their findings back out beyond this horizon. Their journey and findings would be lost to the rest of the entire universe for all time. But they would enjoy the adventure, for as long as they survived … maybe …. >>️

# gst; apropos of hair that can be combed, some perturbation fields, along the event horizon of extreme black holes, seem to evolve in time indefinitely

<<  black holes can be fully characterized by only three physical quantities: their mass, spin and charge. Since they have no additional "hairy" attributes to distinguish them, black holes are said to have "no hair"—Black holes of the same mass, spin, and charge are exactly identical to each other. >>

AA << discovered that a special kind of black hole violates black hole uniqueness, the so-called "no hair" theorem. Specifically, the team studied extremal black holes—holes that are "saturated" with the maximum charge or spin they can possibly carry. They found that there is a quantity that can be constructed from the spacetime curvature at the black hole horizon that is conserved, and measurable by a distant observer. Since this quantity depends on how the black hole was formed, and not just on the three classical attributes, it violates black hole uniqueness. This quantity constitutes "gravitational hair" and potentially measurable by recent and upcoming gravitational wave observatories like LIGO and LISA. >>

<< even though external perturbations of extreme black holes decay as they do also for regular black holes, along the event horizon certain perturbation fields evolve in time indefinitely. >>

<< The uniqueness theorems assume time independence. But the Aretakis phenomenon explicitly violates time independence along the event horizon. This is the loophole through which the hair can pop out and be combed at a great distance by a gravitational wave observatory, >> Lior Burko.
