# ai-bot: Cybloids − Creation and Control of Cybernetic Colloids.

FIG. 11. Particle clusters formed for different parameters of the feedback potential.

AA << present an idea to create particles with freely selectable properties. The properties might depend, for example, on the presence of other particles (hence mimicking specific pair or many-body interactions), previous configurations (hence introducing some memory or feedback), or a directional bias (hence changing the dynamics). Without directly interfering with the sample, each particle is fully controlled and can receive external commands through a predefined algorithm that can take into account any input parameters. This is realized with computer-controlled colloids, which (AA) term cybloids - short for cybernetic colloids. >>

<< For a single particle, this programming can cause subdiffusive behavior or lend activity. For many colloids, the programmed interaction potential allows to select a crystal structure at wish. Beyond these examples, (AA) discuss further opportunities which cybloids offer. >>️

# gst: anisotropic active depletion around a self-propelled non-interactive colloids; three characteristic states could be identified.

<< Active colloids in a bath of inert particles of smaller size cause anisotropic depletion. >>️

Here AA << combine mesoscale hydrodynamic simulation as well as theoretical analysis to examine the physical origin for the active depletion around a self-propelled noninteractive colloid. >>️

Their << results elucidate that the variable hydrodynamic effect critically governs the microstructure of the depletion zone. Three characteristic states of anisotropic depletion are identified, depending on the strength and stress of activity. >>️

<< Furthermore, (AA) demonstrate that such depletion in nonequilibrium results in various clusters with ordered organization of squirmers, which follows a distinct principle contrary to that of the entropy scenario of depletion in equilibrium. >>

# gst: traveling strings of active dipolar colloids.

AA << study an intriguing new type of self-assembled active colloidal polymer system in 3D. It is obtained from a suspension of Janus particles in an electric field that induces parallel dipoles in the particles as well as self-propulsion in the plane perpendicular to the field. >>

<< At low volume fractions, in experiment, the particles self-assemble into 3D columns that are self-propelled in 2D. Explicit numerical simulations combining dipolar interactions and active self-propulsion find an activity dependent transition to a string phase by increasing dipole strength. >>

AA << classify the collective dynamics of strings as a function of rotational and translational diffusion. (..) # gst: instability and self-propulsion of flexible autophoretic filaments; it was observed distinct swimming modes, steadily translating "U" and metastable rotating "S" shapes.

<< ️Over the past decade, autophoretic colloids have emerged as a prototypical system for studying self-propelled motion at microscopic scales, with promising applications in microfluidics, micro-machinery, and therapeutics. Their motion in a viscous fluid hinges on their ability to induce surface slip flows that are spatially asymmetric, from self-generated solute gradients. >>

<<️ Here, (AA) demonstrate theoretically that a straight elastic filament with homogeneous surface chemical properties -- which is otherwise immotile -- can spontaneously achieve self-propulsion by experiencing a buckling instability that serves as the symmetry-breaking mechanism. Using efficient numerical simulations, (They) characterize the nonlinear dynamics of the elastic filament and show that, over time, it attains distinct swimming modes such as a steadily translating "U" shape and a metastable rotating "S" shape when semi-flexible, and an oscillatory state when highly flexible. >>

<< (AA) construct a phase diagram using 𝑘-means clustering analysis based on domain elongation, α-shapes, contour metrics, and the degree of phase separation. (They) identify six characteristic structural regimes: a structureless phase, an arrested structure, sheets, ribbons, a spiky phase, and a transient fluid-fluid regime. >>

# gst: gigantic dynamical spreading and anomalous diffusion of jerky active particles.

<< ️Jerky active particles are Brownian self-propelled particles which are dominated by “jerk,” the change in acceleration. They represent a generalization of inertial active particles. In order to describe jerky active particles, a linear jerk equation of motion which involves a third-order derivative in time, Stokes friction, and a spring force (AA) combined with activity modeled by an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This equation of motion (They) solved analytically and the associated mean-square displacement (MSD) is extracted as a function of time. >>

<< ️For small damping and small spring constants, the MSD shows an enormous superballistic spreading with different scaling regimes characterized by anomalous high dynamical exponents 6, 5, 4, or 3 arising from a competition among jerk, inertia, and activity. When exposed to a harmonic potential, the gigantic spreading tendency induced by jerk gives rise to an enormous increase of the kinetic temperature and even to a sharp localization-delocalization transition, i.e., a jerky particle can escape from harmonic confinement. >>

<< ️The transition can be either first or second order as a function of jerkiness. Finally (AA)  shown that self-propelled jerky particles governed by the basic equation of motion can be realized experimentally both in feedback-controlled macroscopic particles and in active colloids governed by friction with memory. >>

AA << show that square lattices consisting of colloid-supported lipid bilayers functionalized with DNA linkers act as microscale floppy spring networks. # gst: stochastic resonance mediated by optimal noise level values; transport of colloidal particles induced by substrate concentration oscillations.

AA << show the existence of a  stochastic resonant regime in the transport of active colloidal particles under confinement. The periodic addition of substrate to the system causes the spectral amplification to exhibit a maximum for an optimal noise level value. The consequence of this is that particles can travel longer distances with lower fuel consumption. The stochastic resonance phenomenon found allows the identification of optimal scenarios for the transport of active particles, enabling them to reach regions that are otherwise difficult to access, and may therefore find applications in transport. >>️

# gst: ️apropos of spontaneous active matter, the active droploids.

<< Active matter comprises self-driven units, such as bacteria and synthetic microswimmers, that can spontaneously form complex patterns and assemble into functional microdevices. These processes are possible thanks to the out-of-equilibrium nature of active-matter systems, fueled by a one-way free-energy flow from the environment into the system. Here, (AA) take the next step in the evolution of active matter by realizing a two-way coupling between active particles and their environment, where active particles act back on the environment giving rise to the formation of superstructures. >>️

<< These structures hinge on mutually coupled structure formation processes of the colloids, which form an engine, and the surrounding solvent, which phase separates in regions of high colloidal density and encapsulates the engine within a droplet shell.  >>

# gst: apropos of reversibility, dynamics of reversible plasticity in an amorphous solid.

<< ️Local rearrangements are the elements of plastic deformation in an amorphous solid. In oscillatory shear, they can switch reversibly between two distinct configurations. While these repeating relaxations are typically considered in the limit of slow driving, their dynamics is less well understood. >>

<< ️(AA) perform experiments on a colloidal amorphous solid at an oil-water interface. The rearrangement timescales we observe span at least 1 decade, with no apparent upper bound. As frequency is increased, individual rearrangements appear faster and more hysteretic, but may disappear entirely above a crossover frequency -- suggesting that in practical experiments, the slowest rearrangements may be latent. (They) show how to find the effective potential energy that reproduces a particle's frequency-dependent motion. In rare cases, this potential energy has only one minimum. >>

# gst: attraction-enhanced emergence of friction (in colloidal matter)

<< How frictional effects emerge at the microscopic level in particulate materials remains a challenging question, particularly in systems subject to thermal fluctuations due to the transient nature of interparticle contacts. >>

Here, AA << directly relate particle-level frictional arrest to local coordination in an attractive colloidal model system. (They) reveal that the orientational dynamics of particles slows down exponentially with increasing coordination number due to the emergence of frictional interactions, the strength of which can be tuned simply by varying the attraction strength. Using a simple computer simulation model, (they) uncover how the interparticle interactions govern the formation of frictional contacts between particles. >>

AA << results establish quantitative relations between friction, coordination, and interparticle interactions. This is a key step toward using interparticle friction to tune the mechanical properties of particulate materials. >>️

<< Importantly, almost all theoretical and simulation studies on such systems do not account for interparticle friction. Incorporating frictional constraints to rolling and sliding between particles will likely have a pronounced effect on a variety of phenomena studied in attractive colloidal matter such as gel formation, coarsening and failure. >>

# gst: anisotropic active Brownian particle in two dimensions under stochastic resetting.

<< ️(AA) study the dynamical behavior of an anisotropic active Brownian particle subjected to various stochastic resetting protocols in two dimensions. The motion of shape-asymmetric active Brownian particles in two dimensions leads to anisotropic diffusion at short times, whereas rotational diffusion causes the transport to become isotropic at longer times. >>

<< ️(They) have considered three different resetting protocols: (1) complete resetting, when both position and orientation are reset to their initial states, (2) only the position is reset to its initial state, and (3) only orientation is reset to its initial state. >>

<< ️(They) reveal that orientational resetting sustains anisotropy even at late times. When both the spatial position and orientation are subject to resetting, a complex position probability distribution forms in the steady state. This distribution is shaped by factors such as the initial orientation angle, the anisotropy of the particle, and the resetting rate. >>

<< ️When only the translational degrees of freedom are reset, while the particle's orientation evolves naturally, the steady state no longer depends on particle asymmetry. In contrast, if only the orientation is reset, the long-term probability distribution becomes Gaussian, using an effective diffusion tensor—containing nondiagonal elements—defined by the resetting rate. More broadly, the interaction between translational and rotational dynamics, in combination with stochastic resetting, produces distinct behaviors at late times that are absent in symmetric particles. >>

<< ️Given recent progress in experimental resetting techniques, these (AA) results could be highly useful for controlling asymmetric active colloids, such as in self-assembly applications. >>

# gst: emergence of self-organizing zigzag patterns among (magnetic) particles suspended in a liquid

<< When molecules or bacteria organize into a long-range pattern, researchers want to understand how the microscopic interactions lead to the macroscopic order. (AA) observed such self-organization in magnetic particles suspended in a liquid and subjected to an oscillating magnetic field. Through experiments and simulations, the team showed that the resulting zigzag pattern is explained by the fluid flow generated around the oscillating particles, not by any details of the particles or the applied field. Similar zigzag patterns have also been seen in charged colloids subjected to oscillating electric fields, so the explanation may cover a range of particle systems. The researchers also believe that understanding and controlling the effect could lead to useful applications in microfluidics devices. >>️

# gst: stability of particle clusters bound by capillary bridges in extensional flow.

<< ️Capillary suspensions are commonly encountered in a wide array of applications, but their stability in flow is not fully understood. Here, (AA) investigate the stability of a two-particle capillary cluster in extensional flow using a combination of theory and experiments. >>

<< ️A linear stability analysis reveals the existence of a critical capillary number Ca_𝑐=(8/45)⁢cos⁡𝜃 that depends only on the contact angle 𝜃. # gst: apropos of bubble rearrangements, transition from slip to scraping as critical-like behavior in foam dynamics.

<< Jamming systems, including colloids, emulsions, foams, and biological tissues, undergo significant deformation during processes like material scraping or wound self-healing. To adequately spread a foam or cream over a surface, external force must be applied to artificially scrape it. Notably, the transition from slip to scraping when foam is manipulated using a rigid plate remains poorly understood. >>

<< Systematic observations of the internal foam structure during scraping were conducted, and the scraping length was qualitatively analyzed by varying the scraping velocity. (AA) study reveals that the transition from slip to scraping is driven by the sequential propagation of bubble rearrangements.
