# gst: apropos of uncertainty, notes on uncertainty, information, and classical dynamics.

<< Survival in this world is an adventure because we are so ignorant and everything around us seems so uncertain. In fact, it is hard to think of any realistic phenomenon that is completely free from one of the three kinds of uncertainty—deterministic (chaotic), stochastic, and quantum; more often than not, all of the three are present in various degrees. Thus, in order to gain any knowledge about any realistic system, one must understand how to characterize, quantify, and interpret these uncertainties. >>️

# gst: apropos of collective behaviors, a visual model to reproduces swarming, schooling, and milling.

<< Animal collective behavior is often modeled with self-propelled particles, assuming each individual has “omniscient” knowledge of its neighbors. Yet, neighbors may be hidden from view and we do not know the effect of this information loss. To address this question, (AA) propose a visual model of collective behavior where each particle moves according to bioplausible visual cues, in particular the optic flow. This visual model successfully reproduces three classical collective behaviors: swarming (no orientational order), schooling (high orientational order), and milling (the group coordinately swirls in a circular pattern). >>️

# gst: apropos of evaporation, puncturing of active drops

<< By virtue of self-propulsion, active particles impart intricate stresses to the background fluids. (..) this active stress can be utilized to greatly control evaporation dynamics of active drops. >>

AA << discover a new phenomenon of puncturing of the active drops, where the air-liquid interface of the drop undergoes spontaneous tearing and there occurs a formation of a new three-phase contact line due to the liquid-air interface hitting the liquid-solid interface through evaporation-driven mass loss. Post puncturing, (AA) see an inside-out evaporation of the drop, where the new contact line sweeps towards the pinned outer contact line of the drops, contrasting regular drops that straightaway shrink to zero volume with self-similar shape. >>

<< Furthermore, (..) the activity inside the drops can manipulate the three-phase contact-line dynamics, which for contractile drops can result in an up to 50% enhanced lifetime of the drop and 33% quicker evaporation for extensile drops. By analyzing the flux distribution inside the drop, (AA) gain insights on nonintuitive deposition patterns (e.g., ring galaxy type deposits that demonstrate controllable spatial gradients in the concentrations of the deposited particles) of active particles, which are oftentimes biological substances or bimetallic nanoparticles of interest. >>

# life: hypothetical 'subtle variations' about three ancient neuro-cognitive models, the nomadic explorer, the nomadic owner, the farmer.

<< Prehistoric humans underwent three major migration events across Eurasia, influencing the genetic diversity of present-day Europe. These include the arrival of hunter-gatherers approximately 45,000 years ago, the expansion of Neolithic farmers from the Middle East around 11,000 years ago, and the rise of animal husbandry when steppe pastoralists migrated from the Pontic Steppe approximately 5,000 years ago. Each of these events represents a crucial period in human history that has shaped the genetic diversity observed in present-day Europe, although specific genetic and demographic details remain poorly characterized. >>️

# gst: analogy between quasi-2D and 3D liquid drops.

<< Liquid drops are everywhere around us and important in numerous technological applications. Here, (AA) demonstrate a quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) analogy to the regular, often close to axisymmetric, three-dimensional (3D) drops. >>️

<< The Q2D drops are created by confining liquids between vertical walls, leading to formation of low aspect ratio capillary bridges that are deformed by gravity. When stationary, the Q2D drops adopt projected shapes that are analogous to 3D sessile drops, ranging from circular drops to puddles. >>️

<< When moving, the Q2D drops exhibit capillary and fluid mechanical behaviours analogous to 3D drops, including impacts and sliding on pseudo-surfaces. The Q2D drops also exhibit considerably more complex phenomena such as levitation, instabilities and pattern formation when subjected to external electric, magnetic and flow fields -- all seen also in regular 3D drops. >>️

<< 3D-Q2D analogy suggests that the diverse and often complicated phenomena observed in 3D drops can be studied in the Q2D geometry, >>

# behav: mechanics of fire ant rafts as an active self-healing membrane

<< The unique ability of fire ants to form a raft to survive flooding rain has enchanted biologists as well as researchers in other disciplines. (..) a three-dimensional aggregation of fire ants exhibits viscoelasticity with respect to external compression and shearing among numerous unusual mechanical properties. >>️

AA << study the ant raft in its natural form, i.e., composing no more than two layers. This allowed to focus on the cracks that are unique to membranes and see how their patterns are influenced by the fact that these ants are mobile and can self-repair the damage to keep their raft from disintegration. >>️

They << show that vertical and horizontal shaking can also prompt fire ants to aggregate.  (..)  the pull force expedites the alignment of fire ants, in analogy to the effect of an electric field on liquid crystal polymers. >>️

<< One major finding is that the raft can exhibit zero Poisson's ratio without resorting to specific geometry structures. This is enabled by the active recruitment of ants from the top layer to the bottom layer to keep the raft from disintegrating. >>️

# gst: self-repelling species could self-organize.

<< Catalytically active particles form clusters when they respond not only to their own chemical targets but to those of other catalysts, too. >>️

AA  << show that the phenomenon of self-organization depends strongly on the network topology. >>️

They << modeled a three-species system (..) systems where each species responds chemotactically only to its own substrate cannot self-organize unless one species is self-attracting. >>️

<< Next, they developed a model that allowed species to respond to both their substrates and their products. # gst: apropos of collisions of a vortex dipoles, vortex unbinding, vortex pinning to the edge, and emission of rarefaction pulses.

<< Vortices and dark solitons are fundamental defects that appear in nonlinear physics at all scales, from nonlinear optics to cosmic fluids. In two or three dimensions, dark solitons are fundamentally connected to highly ordered vortex states through an intrinsic modulation instability in the surrounding matter. >>️

<< Here, [AA] report an experimental realization of ring dark soliton (RDS)  generation in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid trapped in a circular box. By quenching the confining box potential, [they] observe an RDS emitted from the edge and its peculiar signature in the radial motion. As an RDS evolves, [they] observe transverse modulations at discrete azimuthal angles, which clearly result in a patterned formation of a circular vortex dipole array. Through collisions of the vortex dipoles with the box trap, [they] observe vortex unbinding, vortex pinning to the edge, and emission of rarefaction pulses. >>

# gst: apropos of coexistence of coherent and incoherent oscillators, chaotic chimera attractors in a triangular network.

<< A prominent type of collective dynamics in networks of coupled oscillators is the coexistence of coherently and incoherently oscillating domains known as chimera states. >>️

<< In a three-population network of identical Kuramoto-Sakaguchi phase oscillators, stationary and periodic symmetric chimeras were previously studied on a reduced manifold in which two populations behaved identically. >>

<< In this paper, (AA) study the full phase space dynamics of such three-population networks. (They) demonstrate the existence of macroscopic chaotic chimera attractors that exhibit aperiodic antiphase dynamics of the order parameters. >>

<< The chaotic chimera states coexist with a stable chimera solution on the Ott-Antonsen manifold that displays periodic antiphase oscillation of the two incoherent populations and with a symmetric stationary chimera solution, resulting in tristability of chimera states. Of these three coexisting chimera states, only the symmetric stationary chimera solution exists in the symmetry-reduced manifold. >>️

# gst: when science meets poetry, an image of three-dimensional stepped cracks (bistability, and their transition to simple cracks)

<< Slow cracks may be simple, with no internal structure. The leading edge of a simple crack, the crack front, forms a single fracture plane in its wake. Slow cracks may also develop segmented crack fronts, each segment propagating along a separate fracture plane. These planes merge at locations that form steps along fracture surfaces. Steps are not stationary, but instead propagate within a crack front. Real-time measurements of crack front structure and energy flux reveal that step dynamics significantly increase energy dissipation and drastically alter crack dynamics. Simple and stepped cracks are each stable. By extending the use of energy balance to include 3D crack front structure, (AA) find that, while energy balance is obeyed, it is insufficient to select the energetically favorable crack growth mode. Transitions from stepped cracks to simple cracks occur only when their in-plane front lengths become equal and a perturbation momentarily changes step topology. Such 3D crack dynamics challenge our traditional understanding of fracture. >>

# life: a proposito di bizzarri scenari, qui una transizione 'a gradino' di ipotetico scenario22

Congo Square, New Orleans (img from web).  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congo_Square

# gst: analogy between streamers in sinking spheroids, gyrotactic plumes and chemotactic collapse (when a plume structure blows up when a parm is above a threshold)

<< In a dilute suspension where sinking spheroids or motile gyrotactic microorganisms are modelled as orientable and negatively buoyant particles, (AA) have found analytical solutions to their steady distributions for a given parallel flow profile. The coupling between their distribution and the vertical flow is nonlinear, enabling the uniform base state to bifurcate into a structure reminiscent of the streamers in settling spheroid suspension and gyrotactic plume. This bifurcation depends on a single parameter that is proportional to the average number of particles on a horizontal cross section. In a three-dimensional axisymmetric system, the plume structure blows up when the parameter is above a threshold. (AA) discuss how this singularity is analogous to the chemotactic collapse of a Keller-Segel model, and the significance this analogy entails. >>

# gst: behavior of microswimmers in a vortex with translational and rotational noise

AA << propose a theoretical model to investigate the dynamics of elongated microswimmers in elementary vortices, namely active particles in two- and three-dimensional rotlets. A deterministic model first reveals the existence of bounded orbits near the centre of the vortex and unbounded orbits elsewhere. (AA) further discover a conserved quantity of motion that allows (..) to map the phase space according to the type of the orbit (bounded vs unbounded). (They) next introduce translational and rotational noise into the system. Using a Fokker--Planck formalism, (AA) quantify the quality of trapping near the centre of the vortex by examining the probability of escape and the mean time of escape from the region of deterministically bounded orbits. (AA) finally show how to use these findings to formulate a prediction for the radius of the depletion zone, which compares favourably with the experiments of Sokolov and Aranson (2016). >>

# gst: transitions, how two saddles can increase the transient times.

FIG. 8. Attractor and chaotic saddles (..) amplified around three bands of the chaotic attractor.  The global chaotic saddle is colored blue, and the local chaotic saddle is colored red. The attractors are colored black.

AA << consider a dissipative version of the standard nontwist map. Nontwist systems present a robust transport barrier, called the shearless curve, that becomes the shearless attractor when dissipation is introduced. This attractor can be regular or chaotic depending on the control parameters. Chaotic attractors can undergo sudden and qualitative changes as a parameter is varied. These changes are called crises, and at an interior crisis the attractor suddenly expands. Chaotic saddles are nonattracting chaotic sets that play a fundamental role in the dynamics of nonlinear systems, they are responsible for chaotic transients, fractal basin boundaries, chaotic scattering and they mediate interior crises. >>
