# gst: self-trapped nonlinear waves with multiple phase singularities.

AA << investigate the existence of self-trapped nonlinear waves with multiple phase singularities. >>️

They << focus on configurations with an antivortex surrounded by a triangular arrangement of vortices within a hosting soliton. (AA) find stationary patterns that can be interpreted as stable self-trapped vortex crystals, constituting the first example of a configuration of this sort with space-independent potentials. Their stability is linked to their norm, transitioning from unstable to stable as their size increases, with an intermediate region where the structure is marginally unstable, undergoing a remarkable and puzzling self-reconstruction during its evolution. >>️

gst: actually and counterintuitively a coherent jump could generate disorder.

AA << consider a quantized version of a model for “random walk in random environment.” (..) # gst: breakthrough in unstable growth processes, shorter branches can revive when a striking transition of the leading branch reaches the boundary of the system.

<< Transport networks, such as vasculature or river networks, provide key functions in organisms and the environment. They often emerge as a result of unstable growth processes, in which growing branches compete for the available flux. This leads to effective repulsion between the branches and screening of the shorter ones. (AA) show that a striking transition in growth dynamics takes place as the leading branch reaches the boundary of the system. The shorter branches revive then and grow toward the leading one forming loops. These effects are observed both in living and inanimate systems. >>

# gst: even tight-binding billiards could exhibit chaotic behaviors

<< Recent works have established universal entanglement properties and demonstrated validity of single-particle eigenstate thermalization in quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians. However, a common property of all quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians studied in this context so far is the presence of random terms that act as a source of disorder. >>

AA << introduce tight-binding billiards in two dimensions, which are described by non-interacting spinless fermions on a disorder-free square lattice subject to curved open boundaries. >>

They <<  show that many properties of tight-binding billiards match those of quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians (..) these properties indeed appear to be consistent with the emergence of quantum chaos in tight-binding billiards. This statement nevertheless needs to be taken with some care since there exist a sub-extensive (in lattice volume) set of single-particle eigenstates that are degenerate in the middle of the spectrum at zero energy (i.e., zero modes), for which the agreement with RMT (random matrix theory) predictions may not be established. >>

# gst: self-buckling and self-writhing of semi-flexible Entities (among P. mirabilis)

<< Multi-flagellated microorganisms can buckle and writhe under their own activity as they swim through a viscous fluid. New equilibrium configurations and steady-state dynamics then emerge which depend on the organism's mechanical properties and on the oriented distribution of flagella along its surface. Modeling the cell body as a semi-flexible Kirchhoff rod and coupling the mechanics to a dynamically evolving flagellar orientation field, (AA) derive the Euler-Poincaré equations governing dynamics of the system, and rationalize experimental observations of buckling and writhing of elongated swarmer P. mirabilis cells. >>

<< A sequence of bifurcations is identified as the body is made more compliant, due to both buckling and torsional instabilities. The results suggest that swarmer cells invest no more resources in maintaining membrane integrity than is necessary to prevent self-buckling. >>

# gst: apropos of transitions, evaporating binary microdroplets with phase segregation

<< Phase segregation triggered by selective evaporation can emerge in multicomponent systems, leading to complex physiochemical hydrodynamics. Recently, Li et al. (2018) and Kim & Stone (2018) reported a segregative behavior (i.e., demixing) in an evaporating binary droplet. In this work, by means of experiments and theoretical analysis, (AA) investigate the flow dynamics after the occurrence of the phase segregation. >>

<< First, (AA) experimentally reveal the overall physiochemical hydrodynamics of the evaporation process, including the segregative behavior and the resulting flow structure close to the substrate. By quantifying the evolution of the radial flow, (they) identify three successive life stages of the evaporation process. >>

<< At Stage I, a radially outward flow is observed. It is driven by the Marangoni effect. At the transition to Stage II, the radial flow partially reverses, starting from the contact line. This flow breaks the axial symmetry and remarkably is driven by the segregation itself. Finally at Stage III, the flow decays as the evaporation gradually ceases. At this stage the segregation has grown to the entire droplet, and the flow is again controlled by the Marangoni effect. The resulting Marangoni flow homogenizes the distribution of the entrapped volatile water over the whole droplet. >>️

# gst: apropos of transitions, two aspects of intermittency

<< intermittency produces significant probability of rare events that may locally accelerate the collision rates by a large factor in comparison with estimates using typical events. >>

<< Increasing intermittency of turbulence destroys the theory not via stronger bursts, but rather via increase of characteristic sizes of regions of calm and quiescent flow. ([AA️] remind that these two aspects of intermittency go together: increase of regions of calm flow and at the same time increased probability of strong bursts ([8] U. # gst: the effects of order- disorder on a system of swarmalators that move on a one-dimensional ring.

<< Swarmalators are phase oscillators that cluster in space, like fireflies flashing on a swarm to attract mates. >>

<< In this work, (AA) explore the effects of disorder induced by phase frustration on a system of Swarmalators that move on a one-dimensional ring. >>

They find << numerically and analytically, the ordered and disordered states that emerge in the system. The active states, not present in the model without disorder, resemble states found previously in numerical studies for the 2D Swarmalators system. One of these states, in particular, shows similarities to turbulence generated in a flattened media. (AA) show that all ordered states can be generated for any values of the coupling constants by tuning the phase frustration parameters only. Moreover, many of these combinations display multi-stability. >>️

# gst: a flapping forward flight (among Papilio polytes and Kallima inachus)

<< The effect of wing shape on a forward-flying butterfly via decoupled factors of the wing-swept angle and the aspect ratio (AR) was investigated numerically. >>️

<< The results show that, through (AA) models, the effects of the wing-swept angle and AR were decoupled; both have distinct flow mechanisms and aerodynamic force trends and are consistent in the two butterfly species (Papilio polytes and Kallima inachus). For a fixed AR, a backward-swept wing increases lift and drag because of the enhanced attachment of the leading-edge vortex with increased strength of the wingtip vortex and the spanwise flow. For a fixed wing-swept angle, a small AR wing increases lift and decreases drag because of the large region of low pressure downstream and the wake-capture effect. Coupling these effects, the largest lift-to-drag ratio occurs for a forward-swept wing with the smallest AR. These results indicate that, in a flapping forward flight, sweeping a forewing forward relative to a hindwing is suitable for cruising. >>

# gst: intentional defects to trap confined acoustic modes that are protected from perturbation

AA << has discovered how to exploit certain defects to protect confined energy in acoustics systems. Their experimental approach provides a versatile platform to create at-will defects for further theoretical validation and to improve control of waves in other systems, such as light >>

<< We set to understand whether topological defects, such as disclinations, can be created to trap highly confined acoustic modes that are protected from perturbation, (..) Our core insight was that, if we consider the point group symmetry of the disclination, a pair of disclinations modes are prevented from pairing away from zero frequency. # gst: apropos of transitions, perspectives on viscoelastic flow instabilities; the 'porous individualism'

<< given the observation that disorder can suppress the transition to elastic turbulence in 2D porous media (..), it has been unclear whether and how this transition manifests in disordered 3D media — though elastic turbulence has been speculated to underlie the long-standing observation that the macroscopic flow resistance of an injected polymer solution can abruptly increase above a threshold flow rate in a porous medium, but not in bulk solution >>️

AA << found that the transition to unstable flow in each pore is continuous, arising due to the increased persistence of discrete bursts of instability above a critical value of the characteristic (Weissenberg no.) Wi; however, the onset value varies from pore to pore. This observation that single pores exposed to the same macroscopic flow rate become unstable in different ways provides a fascinating pore-scale analog of “molecular individualism” [P.  De Gennes, Molecular individualism. Science 276, 1999–2000 (1997)], in which single polymers exposed to the same extensional flow elongate in different ways; the authors therefore termed it “porous individualism”, although it is important to note that here, this effect is still at the continuum (not molecular) scale. Thus, unstable flow is spatially heterogeneous across the different pores of the medium, with unstable and laminar regions coexisting >>

AA << quantitatively established that the energy dissipated by unstable pore-scale fluctuations generates an anomalous increase in flow resistance through the entire medium that agrees well with macroscopic pressure drop measurements. >>

# gst: apropos of transitions, the vortex dynamics from a twisted baker map

<< A natural approach to understanding complicated systems is to analyze a collection of simple examples that retain some essential features of the complexity of the original systems. The baker map (..) is one of the simplest models of chaotic dynamical systems. It divides the unit square into p ≥ 2 equal vertical strips, and maps each strip to a horizontal one by squeezing it vertically by the factor p and stretching it horizontally by the same factor. The horizontal strips are laid out covering the square. Due to the squeezing/stretching, small initial errors get amplified under iteration, and results in an unpredictable long-term behavior. The name “baker” is used since the action of the map is reminiscent of the kneading dough (..). In this paper (AA) introduce a piecewise linear model of an interaction of stretching and twisting that produces vortex dynamics. >>

# gst: shape-shifting architecture inspired by metamorphosis, the metamorphosis kirigami system.

<< Kirigami is a variation of origami that involves cutting and folding paper. But while kirigami traditionally uses two-dimensional materials, Yin (Jie Yin) applies the same principles to three-dimensional materials. The metamorphosis system starts with a single unit of 3D kirigami. Each unit can form multiple shapes in itself. But these units are also modular—they can be connected to form increasingly complex structures. Because the individual units themselves can form multiple shapes, and can connect to other units in multiple ways, the overall system is capable of forming a wide variety of architectures. >>

<< The system we've developed was inspired by metamorphosis, (..) With metamorphosis in nature, animals change their fundamental shape. We've created a class of materials that can be used to create structures that change their fundamental architecture. (..) Think of what you can build with conventional materials, (..) Now imagine what you can build when each basic building block is capable of transforming in multiple ways.  (..) The metamorphosis kirigami system does not allow you to disassemble a structure, (..) And because the sides of each cubic unit are rigid and fixed at 90-degree angles, the assembled structure does not bend or flex very much. However, the finished structure is capable of transforming into different architectures.>> Jie Yin.️

# gst: pattern generation through turbulent cascades

<< Fully developed turbulence is a universal and scale-invariant chaotic state characterized by an energy cascade from large to small scales where the cascade is eventually arrested by dissipation. In this Letter, (AA) show how to harness these seemingly structureless turbulent cascades to generate patterns. Conceptually, pattern or structure formation entails a process of wavelength selection: patterns typically arise from the linear instability of a homogeneous state. By contrast, the mechanism (they) propose here is fully non-linear and triggered by a non-dissipative arrest of turbulent cascades. Instead of being dissipated, energy piles up at intermediate scales. Using a combination of theory and large-scale simulations, (AA) show that the tunable wavelength of these cascade-induced patterns is set by a non-dissipative transport coefficient called odd or gyro viscosity. This non-dissipative viscosity is ubiquitous in chiral systems (..). Beyond chiral fluids, cascade-induced pattern formation could occur in natural systems (..) as well as in industrial processes (..). >>

# gst: apropos of evaporation, puncturing of active drops

<< By virtue of self-propulsion, active particles impart intricate stresses to the background fluids. (..) this active stress can be utilized to greatly control evaporation dynamics of active drops. >>

AA << discover a new phenomenon of puncturing of the active drops, where the air-liquid interface of the drop undergoes spontaneous tearing and there occurs a formation of a new three-phase contact line due to the liquid-air interface hitting the liquid-solid interface through evaporation-driven mass loss. Post puncturing, (AA) see an inside-out evaporation of the drop, where the new contact line sweeps towards the pinned outer contact line of the drops, contrasting regular drops that straightaway shrink to zero volume with self-similar shape. >>
